Josephine Rita (DiGiovanni) Venturo, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and pillar of strength in the Merrimack Valley community, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at the age of 97. A lifelong resident of Lawrence, Massachusetts, Josephine's life was a testament to resilience, devotion, and grace.
Born in 1928 to the late Gaetano and Angelina (Catalano) DiGiovanni, Josephine was raised in a close-knit Italian-American household where faith, family, and tradition were the cornerstones of daily life. She graduated from St. Mary's Girls High School, where she was known for her sharp intellect and quiet determination. With a deep appreciation for learning, she pursued higher education at Burdett College in Boston, earning her Associate's Degree, a rare and proud accomplishment for a young woman of her time.
Josephine built a successful career in jewelry sales, where her keen eye for beauty and her warm, personable nature made her a trusted advisor to generations of customers. Her professionalism and integrity earned her the respect of colleagues and clients alike, and she took great pride in helping others celebrate life's milestones with elegance and care.
Josephine's greatest legacy lies in the family she nurtured and the love she gave so freely. She was the devoted mother of Patricia Austin and her husband Joseph, Diane Richer and her husband Gary, Gregory Venturo, and Thomas Gerard Venturo. After the untimely passing of her husband, Gregory, Josephine faced the immense challenge of raising four children on her own. With unwavering strength, she created a home filled with love, discipline and laughter. Her kitchen was the heart of the household, where stories were shared and traditions were passed down.
Josephine was the adored grandmother of Jessica, Angie, and Danielle, and the cherished great-grandmother of Deeana. She delighted in their accomplishments, offered sage advice, and never missed a chance to spoil them with her cooking or a warm embrace. Her family was her pride and joy, and she instilled in them the values of hard work, kindness, and perseverance.
Known for her independence, Josephine lived life on her own terms. She was fiercely loyal, deeply compassionate, and quietly courageous. Her presence was a source of comfort and strength to all who knew her. Whether offering a listening ear, a home-cooked meal, or a word of encouragement, she gave of herself without hesitation.
Josephine's roots ran deep in the Merrimack Valley, where she was a familiar face and a trusted friend. Her life was a bridge between generations, and her memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Josephine life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, sacrifice, and joy. Though she has departed this world, her spirit lives on in the hearts of those she touched. May she rest in eternal peace.
