Matthew Steven Childs, "Matt", 63, passed away at his home in Weaverville on August 27, 2022, after a long battle with leukemia.
Matt was an active, energetic man with a passion for learning and new experiences.
An active bicyclist for many years, Matt completed numerous Hilly Hellacious Hundreds, Cycle North Carolinas, and shredded Bent Creek mountain bike trails. With his wife Sandi, he cycled the Orcas Islands, Finger Lakes of New York State, the valleys of Montana, and rode his mountain bike across the Golden Gate Bridge.
Matt competed in off-road motorcycle racing for a number of years with SETRA, the Southeastern Enduro and Trail Riders Association. He won championships in both Enduros and Harescrambles in a number of competitive classes between 2005 and 2008.
Matt enjoyed many years participating in USPSA shooting competitions. He achieved notable accomplishments in all forms of firearms at numerous local and national level matches, as both a range officer and competitor.
Matt was also passionate about auto racing, and competed in local Autocross, Champ Car events, and short-course driver education (SCDE). Matt was a member of the Highlands Sports Car Club and the East Tennessee Region of the Sports Car Club of America.
Matt began his career selling audio-visual equipment as a rep for a number of manufacturers. While working for Custom Audio Design in Athens, Georgia he transitioned from sales into Information Technology. In 1995 Matt began working at Southeastern Container, where he held a number of positions in the IT Department until his retirement in 2022.
Matt was born in Coral Gables, Florida and grew up in the Miami area. He attended Coral Gables High School and The Asheville School, and spent summers at Camp Rockmont in Black Mountain. Having developed a love of the Western NC mountains as a boy, Matt permanently relocated to Asheville in 1978. He married his wife Sandi in 1994 and they lived in Weaverville. Matt and Sandi were active with the National Anatolian Shepherd Rescue Network (NASRN), rescuing, fostering and ultimately adopting many Anatolian Shepherd Dogs.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the NASRN, at www.nasrn.com.
A drop-in memorial service and celebration of Matt's life will be held on September 27nd at the Weaverville Community Center, 60 Lakeshore Drive, Weaverville, from 3:30 to 7:00 pm.
