Matthew Deschenes Obituary

Matthew J. Deschenes-most fondly known as "Matty", 44, passed away unexpectedly on November 19, 2025 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, NH after experiencing a brain aneurysm. He was born on June 22, 1981 in Beverly, MA, son of Beverly (Lowell) Deschenes and the late Daniel Deschenes.
Matty was a lifelong resident of Exeter, NH. He was one of three sons in his family and was a graduate of Exeter High School, Class of 2001. Throughout his childhood and teenage years, he developed a deep love for hockey and played on numerous teams growing up.
Matty's soulmate was Wendy Schmitt, whom he originally met in high school, though it wasn't until shortly after graduation-through mutual friends-that their true story together began. They went on to share a beautiful life and family, including their cherished teenage son, Collin. Matty's favorite place to be was anywhere with Wendy, Collin, and the people he loved.
Matty had a passion for the arts. He was a talented oil painter and photographer and had an eye for color, shape, and design. Professionally, he was a co-owner of Deschenes & Sons Landscaping alongside his brothers, proudly continuing the business founded by their father. Matty specialized in landscape design and sketched every plan by hand with great care. He also genuinely enjoyed the day-to-day work of mowing lawns and planting gardens for his clients.
Being outdoors brought Matty happiness-whether spending a summer day at the beach, four-wheeling in Ossipee, camping, or traveling. He also loved visiting Boston to take in museums and admire the city's architecture.
Those who knew Matty will remember his big heart, his easy-going nature, and his ability to make friends wherever he went. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need, and after every adventure and every hard day's work, his favorite landing place was home.
Matty is survived by the love of his life, Wendy Schmitt; his son, Collin Deschenes; his mother, Beverly Deschenes, and her partner Lou Asbury; his father's longtime companion, Elizabeth Barrett; his brothers, Daniel Deschenes Jr. and his partner Brianna Provencher, and Christopher Deschenes; as well as three nephews, Caleb, Ethen, and Owen.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, November 24, 2025 from 4:00–7:00 PM at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, NH.

Please accept my heartfelt sympathies for Matty's passing. Matty was a student of mine. I will always remember him as a sweet, kind and fun-loving little boy. His eyes always twinkled with his ever-present smile. Much love to those he leaves behind.
