Matthew M. Gallagher, 77, of Ormond Beach, Florida, passed away on November 10, 2024. Born in Erie, PA, on April 27, 1947, Matt was the son of the late Hugh and Margaret (Herrmann) Gallagher. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack Gallagher and Joe Gallagher of Erie, PA. In addition to his wife, Jacqueline, he is survived by his brother, Tom of Olathe, KS. He is also survived by his son, Justin (Marianna) of Bozeman, MT, and his son Timothy (Andrew) of Chicago, IL. He was also a very proud "Grandpa Matt" to Lexie, Sebastian, Eloise, and Astrid. Jacqui's son Craig Foster (Deby Marsh) of Wertach, Germany, were also two of his favorite people whom he loved dearly. Matt was a 1965 graduate of Cathedral Prep high school in Erie, PA, and received his B.A. Degree in Science from Penn State University in 1969. Upon graduation from college, Matt was accepted into pilot training in the U.S. Air Force where he served actively as a pilot in the KC-135 for nine years and then as a pilot and a Civil Service Technician in the New Hampshire Air National Guard for 25 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Throughout his military career, Matt served in many capacities including Instructor/Evaluator Pilot and Squadron Commander as well as Deployment Commander in various tours throughout the world. He served two years in Southeast Asia during the Viet Nam war and tours in Asia during the Iraqi Desert Storm war. Additional tours took him to all corners of the world many times. While working with the National Guard, Matt also flew the B-727 and the DC-9 for Eastern Airlines. Upon retiring from the military Matt flew for Pan American Airways and then flew corporate jets for NetJets before hanging up his wings in 2014. Met Matt at Pease AFB in Portsmouth, NH. He was one of many who shared a ski lodge. He was an usher at our wedding. My condolences and prayers go out to his family. He was a wonderful man!

Matt was our next door neighbor in Eliot, ME for 15 years. Our children grew up together, we all skied, played games and traveled together. I'll always remember when he flew us to Nantucket in his little plane. With his instrument training he was able to land in the fog!
In later years he would come north in his RV and visit. We had a fabulous trip to St. Maarten with Matt and Jaqui. The picture is of Matt and Dan watching the Heineken Regatta. We will miss Matt. Rest in peace friend.

Jacqui, Justin, and Timothy, my wife Mary Lynn and I would like to express our sincere condolences on the passing of Matt. We were the same age, attended the same grade school and high school together. In our younger years Matt and I rode motorcycles, attended dances and sporting events, and partied hearty together. In our retirement, when he made his annual trip to Erie, Matt and I and our wives would play a couple rounds of golf, go out to eat, have a few ( sometimes a row ) of cold ones. We are devastated at the sudden loss of Matt. Will miss the phone calls and especially his summer visits. Matt was more than a cousin, he was my friend. Miss you already.

Joe and Mary Lynn Herrmann.

Matt was sincerely warm and personable with a smile that could light up a room! It was impossible not to share a few laughs whenever our paths would cross.
He was a great officer and pilot and a friend to all who knew him! He will be greatly missed!

Lt Col Gallagher enlisted me into the NHANG in 1995. I still have the photo on my bulletin board. He was my first commander in the 133rd ARS. Good man. RIP sir!

Matt was the genuine friendliest person day in and day out. He also had lived in York Maine as do I and see each other around. I served many years with him in the NHANG had many laughs and great times and he was always smiling and greeting Ops and Maintenance , support on trips, deployments he never had a bad word. I remember he picked us up at Carnoustie CC Scotland , French aerial team practicing all kinds of stuff happening and he says , I can´t believe you missed that putt for a laugh. My condolences and respect to his family and friends. Such a great guy . Tony Reagan
