Matthew "Scott" Gibson, 50, of Ozawkie, KS, passed away peacefully, Thursday, December 12, 2024 at Stormont-Vail Hospital, after battling a hereditary kidney disease for many years.
He was born May 10, 1974 at Topeka, the son of Thomas E. Gibson, II and Patricia A. Sneden. He was a 1992 graduate of Jefferson West High School. He was a long time volunteer firefighter for Jefferson County Fire District #7 as well as serving as an EMT. Scott worked as an engineer for BNSF Railway and then worked as a maintenance man in various places including St. Francis Hospital in Topeka and the City of Ozawkie. He served as mayor and city councilman for the City of Ozawkie and was a 13 year member of the Jefferson West USD #340 Board of Education. Scott had a passion for coaching and loved to coach his kids in softball and baseball and spent many hours on the field. He was also a certified pyrotechnician and carried on a family tradition of celebrating the 4th of July with choreographed fireworks shows.
Scott was united in marriage to Trisha L. Kellenberger on June 6, 1998 at Topeka, she survives at home. He is also survived by four children, one daughter, Whitney (Brent) Roberts, Topeka, three sons, Joshua Gibson, Lenexa, Preston Gibson, Kansas City, KS, Zachary Gibson, Ozawkie, his father, Thomas E. Gibson, II, Howard, CO, mother and step-father, Patricia (Ned) Banks, Perry, one brother, Andrew (Joelle) Boling, Topeka, his in-laws, Jay and Marilyn Kellenberger, Sabetha, KS, two sisters-in-law, Tamra (Jeff) Emert, Phoenix, AZ, Stefany Lesmeister, Topeka and a brother-in-law, Jaron Kellenberger, Topeka as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
Cremation Care is planned. A Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date. Scott's wished to be organ/tissue donor. Memorial donations suggested to Midwest Transplant Network (mwtn.org) or the National Kidney Foundation (www.kidney.org).
Barnett Family Funeral Home/Jefferson County Crematory is assisting the family.
