Matthew H. "Hoop" Grovesteen

Matthew Howard Grovesteen, known to his family and friends as "Hoop", passed away on November 24, 2025. He was born on February 5, 1978, at Tomah Memorial Hospital to Gary and Mary Ann Grovesteen.
Matt graduated from Tomah High School in 1997. In his youth and all through high school, Matt's love for sports was something near and dear to his heart. He enjoyed playing football and baseball up until he was diagnosed with Myotonic Dystrophy in 1989. He didn't let his diagnosis hold him back from trying to do his very best in sports and everything he did in life.
He was a devoted sports fan and a strong supporter of all Tomah High School athletics. His enthusiasm didn't end there, as he
also loved to cheer on the Packers, Brewers, and Badgers. Whether he was cheering in the stands or catching a game on TV, Matt had a great spirit and love for the game.
Matt faced life's adversities with resilience and a smile that could light up a room. His constant positivity and amazing appreciation for life was beyond incredible and something we should all strive for. He left a profound impact on his family and friends with his upbeat attitude and love for life up until his very last days.
Matthew is survived by his parents, Gary and Mary Ann Grovesteen; his siblings Greg (Colleen) Grovesteen, Mitchell Grovesteen, Gayle Fischer, and Meredith Grovesteen; nieces and nephews Kaylee Grovesteen, Logan Grovesteen, Carson Grovesteen, Quinn Grovesteen, Collin Fischer, Kacie Fischer, Brady Fischer, Caden Harmel and Madyson Gilson.
A special "thank you" to the staff at Rolling Hills and the Mayo Clinic Health System in Sparta for their exceptional care! Your love, compassion, and care given to Matt will never be forgotten.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, 3:00 p.m. at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Tomah. Pastor David Dahl will officiate. Family and friends are invited for visitation on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tomah School Athletics or Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. The Torkelson Funeral Home of Tomah is assisting the family with arrangements.
