Matthew Edward Johnson, aged 57 was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and made Detroit (Clinton Township, MI) his home. He passed away on Wednesday, June 11th, 2025 surrounded by his closest family after a long battle with Cancer.
Born March 28th, 1968 in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of the late Dr. John Robert Johnson and Jeanne Frances Johnson. Matt worked in Food & Wine and spent the last 17 years as a dedicated employee of Great Lakes Wine & Spirits in the Detroit area. He was a charismatic “wine guy” who made a friend at every stop he made along the way. His career bled into his family and home where he was the consummate host, and his passion showed in every party he hosted, and meal that he made.
Matt was first and foremost, a Dad and loving Husband. Family was his treasure and there was nothing he enjoyed more than being around his 3 kids, his loving wife, and his animals. He loved nothing more than adventure-filled vacations around the world, as well as his equally adventurous camping trips throughout the state of Michigan. Everyone that was close to Matt, will remember fondly his infectious energy and amazing hugs. Being a dad was his life’s number one success, and he put every bit of passion and purpose into raising his three children, who filled his life with magic. He was also an amazing husband, who made every day special and memorable. Julie was his soulmate and in his last days he was sure of God’s plan that their love would continue after he was gone. He was most proud to be Dad, and “Uncle Matt” to all his loving nieces and nephews. His absence will be missed by all, but the lessons and love that he imparted to everyone will live on through his children and those that cared so deeply for him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Julie (Huvaere) Johnson; Children Emma, Adam, & Molly Johnson; brothers Patrick (Stephanie) Johnson & JR Johnson; Sisters Kathline (Tim) Kline, Grace Schmits, Mary Johnson, & Sara (Mark) Kelsey; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by siblings Joseph Johnson & Molly Johnson.
A memorial service and mass is planned at St. Ambrose Church in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan for Friday June 27th, 2025 with visitation beginning at 11 AM and followed by a Mass beginning at 12 PM.
Contributions in Matthew’s name can be directed to the Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Research Foundation (ACCRF).
