Matthew Thomas Lehman Beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend January 24, 1982- June 25, 2025
Matthew Thomas Lehman passed away peacefully in Katy, Texas surrounded by the love of his family, after a courageous battle with metastatic colon cancer. He was 43 years old.
Born in Hampton Virginia, Matthew lived a life marked by integrity, quiet strength, and relentless perseverance. He graduated from the United States Airforce Academy in Colorado Springs in 2004 with a degree in Physics, an achievement that reflected both his sharp intellect and disciplined spirit. Though his military path was cut short due to a medical condition, Matthew faced each new chapter with resilience and grace.
He went on to pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering at Florida State University before being diagnosed with cancer in 2021. Despite the challenges of treatment, he continued to give himself wholeheartedly. He worked as a substitute teacher for the Bay County school system, an experience he found both meaningful and challenging. He also volunteered at his church serving in the bookstore and on the hospitality team, and gave his time generously to local food drives and community service efforts. He found purpose in lifting others, even when he was fighting his own battle.
Matthew was a devoted Houston Astros fan. His home was filled with Astros memorabilia, and when he lived in Houston, he proudly held a season pass to Minute Maid Park. He rarely missed a game on TV, and watching the Astros with his family brought him joy and comfort, even in his hardest days.
Matthew had a soft spot for animals, especially his two cats Conan and Sheena (lovingly known as "The Cones" and "The Sheen"). Although they passed before him, they gave him a reason to laugh, and brought him years of companionship and unconditional love.
Above all Matthew was also a thoughtful brother, a loving son, and a very proud uncle. He had a dry, quick wit that caught people off guard in the best way, and a steady presence that made others feel heard, safe, and supported. He loved music, and science. One of his favorite songs in his final months was "Wake Me Up Before you Go-Go" by Wham! once saying, "I just can't be sad when I listen to this."
Life presented him with challenge after challenge, but he met each one with resolve, faith and determination. Through it all his sense of humor never faded, and his compassion and faith in Christ only deepened.
He is survived by his loving parents, Martha and Joseph Lehman; his older sister Katherine Nicksic (Dan Nicksic), his younger sister Staci MacQuarrie (Matt MacQuarrie); and his nephews Eli Nicksic, Charles Nicksic, Adam Nicksic, Matthew "MJ" MacQuarrie, and his niece Madison MacQuarrie.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the teams at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Memorial Hermann Hospital Katy, and Orlando Health for their care and compassion throughout Matthew's journey. Special thanks also go to the VA care coordination team, whose efforts behind the scenes ensured that Matthew had access to top of the line treatments in both Houston and New York.
In honor of Matthew's memory, the family encourages you to live with purpose, love your people fiercely, serve your community, and never underestimate the healing magic of a good song and a great ballgame.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Matthew's memory can be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Catholic Charities USA, or a charity of your choice that reflects Matthew's love of science, service, and faith.
