Matthew D. McVey

Matthew Daniel David McVey, age 21, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, died on October 19, 2025, at MyMichigan Medical Center Sault following a seizure. He was born on February 27, 2004, in Sault Ste. Marie, to BobbieJo MacArthur and Louis McVey - but Shawn Payment was his dad.
Matthew attended Lincoln Elementary School before being homeschooled and proudly graduating in 2021. He was the face of a movement, Matthew's Sidekicks, which brought awareness to cerebral palsy and other rare disorders. That movement will continue on in his memory, carrying forward the light and inspiration he gave to so many.
Matthew had a kind and joyful heart. He loved watching television, spending time with animals, caring for turtles and fish tanks, and visiting the deer ranch. More than anything, he adored his sisters, who could always bring out his biggest, brightest smiles.
Matthew's spirit, courage, and love will be forever remembered by his family, friends, and the countless people whose lives he touched.
Matthew is survived by his mother, BobbieJo MacArthur; father, Shawn Payment; godmothers, Teri Stuart and Sandra Stuart; grandmothers, Glenda Jackson-MacArthur and Candice Binggeli; sisters, Tawny Wiseman, Cheyenne McVey, Solara McVey, Kylie Maclean, Anjeli LaTour, Jade Thompson, Daysha Jackson, Elena Stuart, and Ava Stuart; brothers, Joey Culp, Brandon Clement, Thomas Jackson, Ethan Thompson, and Elijah Stuart.
Matthew was preceded in death by his grandma, Paula Broten; grandma, Dixie Letscher; baby sister, Annabelle Stuart; cousins, Amy and Elizabeth; and friend, Hope Ember Akers.
Matthew's Celebration of Life will be held from Saturday, October 25, 2025, until Monday October 27, 2025, at the Niigaanagiizhik Ceremonial Building, 11 Ice Circle Chi Mukwa, Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Traditional Ceremony will begin Saturday at 2:00 PM.
In Lieu of flowers, Matthew's family asks any memorial contributions to be made to Family Life Funeral Homes for the funeral costs.
