Matthew Sankovich Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 28, 2018.
Matthew D. Sankovich, born March 18, 1953 passed away on July 28,2018 after a long battle with many afflictions. Matthew was born in Central City Pa, where he went to school at Marple Newton Senior High, in Newtown Square. He attended College at Widener University when it was a Private Military College. He served as a Major from the College, but after a mission decided it was not in him to make the service his career. He worked at Devereux Foundation in many areas, one being a History instructor, and advanced to a Head position at the Foundation. During this time he met his first wife Linda. Matthew left Pennsylvania and moved to Orlando Florida where he began another area of a career with Holiday Inn at Disney World. He again advanced from a recreational director to front desk Manager at the Hotel. Matthew was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in his teens, but he managed to accomplish many tasks and careers in spite of it. After the death of his second wife, Gerda, at the age of 40, MS had taken it's toll on him and forced him to retire on disability. He had met a young man while working at Holiday Inn, that was from Arkansas, and they talked often. The young man's stories had him so intrigued with Arkansas that upon retiring in 1998 he moved to Berryville Arkansas. There Matthew met Sharon thru a personals ad, and their story is a love story beyond many others. Matthew took Sharon's youngest son, Drake, who was 5 years old, to raise as his own. He loved, mentored and was a wonderful role model to him. Due to an accident in 2009, Matthew developed infections from a broken leg and it added with his MS took it's toll on him. He was in and out of hospitals repeatedly because doctors refused to do what all agreed needed to be done to save his life. He still fought hard and long, achieving what many doctors thought was impossible. He loved going to Las Vegas and had taken many trips before meeting Sharon and Drake, but in 2007 he took them, to which Sharon took him out of the casinos and showed him things he never would have seen or appreciated before. On November 25, 2008, Matthew gave Sharon a dream Commitment Ceremony in Las Vegas. Although they had already committed themselves to each other in the eyes of God, on October 10, 2017, they legalized their commitment with a real wedding ceremony in Eureka Springs Arkansas. Unfortunately, even though Matthew had defeated all odds with a ongoing different major infections that doctors had thought would be his end, he overcame them and managed to live life to the best of his ability and enjoy his family. It was an infection developed from being in the hospital that brought his end. Sharon was at his side when he passed. Sharon would love to meet Russ with Angola and Cookie Man, Edward Wagner, if you know them. She can be contacted at [email protected], or on facebook under Sharon Sankovich in Berryville AR.
