Matthew James Somers

Virginia Beach- Matthew J. Somers, 63, of Virginia Beach, VA died peacefully surrounded by his family and friends on Saturday, February 17, 2024. Matt will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, courage, and especially his fun-loving, optimistic personality.
Matt grew up the fifth of seven siblings in a loving, Irish family. Being born into a tribe of ready made friends made it easy for him to get along with almost anyone. He always saw the good in others and was ready to lend a helping hand or a warm embrace. After graduating from Princess Anne High School, he obtained his plumbing license and began working. Matt soon had many satisfied customers who were happy to recommend him to others. Matt was always sensitive to those who might be struggling financially and would sometimes complete a job with little mention of payment. Matt married Kristina Foster Somers and together had a son, Matthew. Although their marriage ended in divorce, they remained friends and loving parents.
Matt's son, Matthew, was always the center of his life and his very best friend. Matthew was a tremendous blessing to his dad, especially these last few years as Matt's health declined. Matthew was Matt's greatest joy and their bond was unique and unrivaled to all the bonds they might have shared with others.
Matt often hosted fun-filled family gatherings in his backyard where he enjoyed challenging his mom to a game of ping-pong and his son and nephews to a game of pool. The younger generation loved being with their Uncle Matt, who was always the life of the party. Surfing was also a favorite pastime and talent. Matt loved being outdoors and the ocean was his happy place.
Matt is survived by his son, Matthew K. Somers, of Virginia Beach; his siblings, Elizabeth Beldowski (Edmund), Martin Somers (Bonny), Helen Ryan (Pat), Michael Somers (Mary), Amy Richards (Neil), and John Somers (Stephanie). Matt also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews.
Matt was preceded in death by his father, Harold Michael Somers, and his mother, Marjorie Ann Merchant Somers.
A memorial celebration of life will be held for Matt at a later date, at the convenience of the family.
