Matt was a Christmas baby, born in Grand Rapids, on December 25, 1973, to Rick and Cyndee (Kamminga) Viel. Matt was raised in Kalamazoo and graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School. He also graduated from Calvin College, Loma Linda Medical School and also received a master's degree in medical ethics from Loma Linda University. Matt then started his medical professional career in South Dakota, then Edgerton, Minnesota, Delton, Michigan, and finally in Holland, Michigan. He married Jennifer Bruins on June 28, 1997. Matt and Jen are members of Graafschap Christian Reformed Church. He was preceded in death by his mother Cyndee Viel, brother-in-law Kevin Bruins, father-in-law Roger Bruins, and his nephew William Sutton.
Matt is survived by his wife, Jennifer, their sons: James and Sydney Viel, Seth Viel; his father Rick and Deb Viel, sister Mindy and Rob Sutton, mother-in-law Marty Bruins; in-laws: Eric and Janette Bruins, Emily and Steve Dyk; and many extended family members.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Graafschap Christian Reformed Church, 5973 Church Street, Holland MI 49423. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 PM, Friday at the Yntema Funeral Home, 251 S. State Street, Zeeland MI 49464. Interment will be in Gibson Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Barnabas Foundation-Dr. Matthew and Jennifer Viel Stewardship Fund.
