Mattie Rees Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors on Aug. 20, 2025.

Mattie Leen Reed Rees, age 92, passed peacefully into the arms of her Heavenly

Father on August 16, 2025.

Born on July 11, 1933, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, to Hazel Hankins and Bufford Reed,

Mattie lived a life rooted in faith, family, and friendship. A proud graduate of Pine Bluff

High School, she remained an active alumna, regularly attending reunions and

reminiscing with fellow Zebras.

Mattie was a longtime member of Forrest Park Baptist Church on Cherry Street, where

she and her husband Jim found community and spiritual fellowship. She dedicated

many years of service to Pine Bluff Arsenal before retiring.

Mattie was the consummate homemaker-her door always open, her kitchen always

warm, and her cookie jar never empty. She was known for her signature bread and

cookies, which she lovingly baked and delivered to friends and neighbors. Her garden

reflected her nurturing spirit, bursting with caladiums, pansies, and vibrant azaleas that

framed her meticulously kept yard each spring.

She enjoyed connecting with her wide circle of beloved cousins, cherishing the bonds of

extended family and the stories they shared across generations.

Mattie was preceded in death by her first husband, Maurice McCauley; her second

husband, James Rees; and her parents, Hazel and Bufford Reed.

She is survived by her sister, Hilda Stafford; her step-son, James Rees Jr. (Kriste); her

granddaughter, Lydia Rees; her nephew, Bryan Stafford (Stephanie); and her great-

nephews, Caleb Stafford and Micah Stafford.

Mattie's legacy is one of love, hospitality, and unwavering faith. She touched countless

lives with her kindness and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Visitation will be held at Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Home, located at 807 South

Cherry Street in Pine Bluff, on August 25, 2025, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Funeral

services will follow at 11:00 a.m., with a graveside service immediately afterward.
