Maureen M. Madere, 89, passed away on April 27, 2025. She was born on December 28th, 1935, in Bilston, England to John and Lucy (Fieldhouse) Griffiths. As a young child during WWII, Maureen's family lived with the frequent threat of German air raids. Her family had an air raid shelter in their back yard, and she carried a gas mask to school daily along with her classmates. Time outside was spent looking for shrapnel and evenings were spent gathered around the radio. Items were scarce and rationing was common. Maureen's experiences as a young child shaped her perspective throughout life. She was always grateful for the things given her. She was frugal herself but generous with others.
Maureen graduated with the Class of 1952 from Our Lady of Mercy Convent in Wolverhampton. She worked in intelligence at GCHQ, the UK's intelligence and security agency, where she met and married the love of her life, Harry A. Madere, during a joint social event with her American counterparts who worked in intelligence for the United States. Maureen spent twenty-two years as a military wife traveling throughout the world while raising her four children. Upon Harry's retirement, the family moved to Harry's hometown of LaPlace, LA. Maureen spent her later years in Chauvin, LA, fishing, shrimping, and gardening with Harry. She loved the peaceful serenity of living on the bayou.
She became a resident of Francois Bend Assisted Living in 2020, where she formed many friendships. She enjoyed meeting new people and took time to listen to their life stories. She also had many stories of her own; and those who knew her loved to hear about her unique experiences throughout the world as a military wife, especially with her authentic British accent.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved spouse, Harry.
She is survived by her brother, Gary (Janette) Griffiths of Burntwood, England; children, Michael Lee (Ana) Madere of Gonzales, Vicky (Bob) DeCristofaro of Seneca, SC, Tracey (Mark) Foley of Tomball, TX and Scott Madere of LaPlace; her grandchildren, James Madere of Ypsilanti, MI, Bobby Madere of Baton Rouge, Alex Madere of Gonzales, Eric (Molly) DeCristofaro of Glenview, IL, Ashley (Kevin) Ekman of Greer, SC, Austin Foley of Tomball, TX, Bridgette (Aja) Madere of Aurora, CO, Josh (Julia) Madere of Walker, and Heather (Devin) Clift of LaPlace; seven great-grandchildren; and a niece, Lara Griffiths of Solihull, England.
Visitation is from 12 pm – 2 pm, followed by a memorial service at 2 pm on May 10, 2025, at Millet Guidry Funeral Home, 2806 W. Airline Hwy, LaPlace. Interment will follow at St. John Memorial Gardens, 2205 West Airline Hwy, LaPlace. To view or sign online guestbook please visit Milletguidry.com
