Services for Maurice Verlin Goode, 91, of
Indianola, Iowa, who passed away Sunday, January 26, 2025, will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 31, 2025, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, with burial following in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Maurice V. Goode was born on June 1, 1933, in Blakesburg, Iowa to his parents Maurice I. and Goldie (Bloss) Goode. The family was complete with the birth of his sister Phyllis on May 1, 1939.
Maurice's parents purchased a farm in Clio, Iowa, in 1940 and moved the family there. Maurie grew up attending a one room country school by riding his pony there. When his sister was old enough to go to school, she rode behind Maurie on the back of the pony. He graduated from Lineville High School and was a student at Iowa State University for two years.
Maurie enlisted in the United States Army and served with the rank of SP2 from January 1955 to December 1957, when he was honorably discharged. He served as a microwave repairman for 26 months at a base in Japan. This base transmitted all military information throughout the world.
Maurie met his wife, Mary, in 1961 at a singles dance held at the former Hotel Savery in Des Moines. Mary asked him for a dance when they held a ladies choice dance. Maurie always enjoyed his story that Mary picked him up. They were married on February 10, 1963 at Mary's hometown of Sibley, Iowa. After the wedding, they left for Moorhead, Minnesota, where Maurie was employed at the time. They happily returned to Des Moines for new employment for Maurie.
Their son, Maurice Michael Goode was born in February of 1964 in Des Moines. The family was complete with the adoption of their daughter, Michelle, born in January of 1971 in Dubuque, Iowa and adopted five days later.
Maurie and Mary purchased a Wheel Horse lawn and garden business in Indianola. They did business as Goode Sales and Service, Inc from 1972 to 1985. Throughout those years, they sold of hand mowers, chainsaws, snowmobiles, golf carts, mini bikes, trailers, Kubota equipment and Deutz farm tractors.
Maurie was the lead singer and front man for the band known as the Country Boys. Later their name was changed to Country Gentlemen. After entertaining for decades, they were no longer boys. They entertained in many parts of the state of Iowa. Some venues in the Des Moines area included the Val Air Ballroom, Lake Robbins, Prairie Meadows, Hoyt Sherman Theatre and the Iowa State Fair. Their longest engagement was the former Holiday Inn South. They played there every Thursday night for thirteen years. Their last performance, after almost fifty years together, was a dance at the Indianola Senior Center.
Talent Agencies employed Maurie for TV and radio commercials. He was also featured in published ads. Maurie lived a very colorful and varied life enjoying it immensely.
Maurie is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Maurice "Mike" Goode and Michelle (Brent) Spear; grandson, Austin (Haley) Spear and daughters, Hazel, Alice and Lucinda; granddaughter, Allysa (Zane Hatfield) Spear, and children, Sydney, Bertie and Lane; grandson, Addison (Emily) Spear and their daughter, Sophie; and sister, Phyllis (Earl) Dechant. He was preceded in death by an infant child; and parents, Maurice and Goldie Goode.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, January 30, 2025, at Overton Funeral Home. Memorials, in memory of Maurie, can be made to the Denny Best Keep Playing Fund through the Indianola Music Boosters. Checks may be written out to "Indianola Music Boosters" with "Denny Best Memorial" in the memo line.
