Max B. Thomas turned 71 last month before passing away on Oct 17 in Lexington's Albert B. Chandler Hospital with his loving wife, Cathy Thomas, holding his hand. Born in Shelbyville, Max grew up working in tobacco fields and continued taking on seasonal work long after he pulled his way up the state government chain, becoming a computer programmer on many of Kentucky's most valued software systems. He was also an equity trader, a janitor, and a coach for his three kids' many sports teams. Yet his greatest passion was working for Frankfort's Democratic Party registering voters, helping fundraise, and inspiring civic action on a local and national level.
But all of his hard work came second to his love for family. For Max, family was everything.
Max is survived by his wife Cathy; children Marvin Thomas, Louisville, Alex Chew (Wellington), Austin, TX and Deana Thomas of Frankfort. He is also survived by his siblings Denise Williams and Paul Thomas of Shelbyville; and Debbie and Linda Thomas of Louisville; as well as sisters-in-laws Rosiland Greene, Charlene Williams (Thorse), Cindy Garrett and Coliss Ferguson of Louisville. He also had a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins across the South and Midwest who loved him.
He was preceded in death by his father Marvin Thomas, mother Eva Shouse, siblings Pat and Darran Thomas (Donna), along with in-laws Nora and A. D. Ferguson of Mt. Sterling.
Funeral services will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church on Monday, November 4, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Emily Holladay officiating. Visitation will be at Immanuel Baptist Church from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Monday. Committal services will be private.
Arrangements are under the direction of Harrod Brothers Funeral Home & Crematory.

Living in Shelbyville, families were close. One of my many memories of Max was his support for voter registration. While his health allowed, he always come home for Martinsville Day & register voters. He will be missed.
