Mayra Julia Cruz Resto, a devoted wife, mother, educator, and beloved member of her community, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2026, in
Virginia Beach, Virginia. She was born on October 20, 1960, in Puerto Rico, where her life of compassion, strength, and service began.
Mayra dedicated her professional life to education, serving as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher within the Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Portsmouth Public School Systems. Through her work, she touched countless lives, helping students find not only their voices in a new language, but also confidence, belonging, and hope.
In 1989, Mayra married the love of her life, Arcenio Gonzalez. As a proud Navy spouse, she carried the weight of the household with grace and resilience while Arcenio served 20 years in the United States Navy, often deployed every six months. During those years, Mayra raised their children, maintained their home, and provided unwavering support to her family. Her strength and dedication did not go unnoticed-her family remembers her as the backbone of their household and the heart of their home.
Mayra was a beautiful woman with an even more beautiful soul and spirit. She was known for her kindness, quiet strength, and selfless devotion to those she loved. Her warmth and compassion left a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to know her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, German Cruz and Justa Resto.
Mayra will be laid to rest at Albert G. Horton, Jr., Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia. The date and time of services will be announced at a later time.
