Jewel Mayzell Palmer, known affectionately to friends and family as Mayzell, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, in Myrtle, Mississippi, at the venerable age of 102. Born on October 30, 1923, in New Albany, MS, to Richard Payne and Della Motes Payne, Mayzell's life was a remarkable journey that touched many hearts and lives.
Mayzell was the loving matriarch of a large and thriving family. She leaves behind a legacy of love and nurturing, survived by her devoted son Billy Palmer, and her caring daughter Wilma Cobb, married to Cary. Mayzell's love extended to her eight grandchildren, as well as to her numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immeasurable joy.
Though she was preceded in death by her parents, her two sons, Carl and Richard Palmer, and her siblings, Mamie Hill, Irene Maxey, Jean Hall, and Charles Richard Payne, Mayzell's spirit of love and resilience continues to inspire all who knew her.
Mayzell dedicated over two decades of service to Baptist Memorial Hospital in New Albany, where she worked in the Dietary Department. Her commitment to caring for others extended beyond her professional life; she was a cherished babysitter and caregiver to many children, including her great-grandchildren and those in her community. Mayzell's home was always a welcoming space where children felt loved and nurtured.
Her interests were as nurturing as her spirit. An avid gardener, Mayzell loved to sew, quilt, and tend to her flower beds. She was renowned for her green thumb, always growing beautiful flowers. Her love for children was also evident in her dedication to keeping the nursery at Glenfield Baptist Church, a service she rendered with joy until her health no longer permitted.
Mayzell Palmer was the epitome of a loving and selfless individual. She was a beacon of kindness and generosity, always placing the needs of others before her own. Her unwavering support and care for her family and community will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
The life of Mayzell Palmer was one of purpose and impact, filled with the simple, yet profound joys of love and service. As we remember her, we are reminded of the beauty in selflessness and the enduring power of a life well-lived. Mayzell's legacy will continue to flourish in the hearts of those she has left behind, and her memory will be cherished forever.
Services to honor her life will be Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 2:00 pm with a visitation beginning at 1:00 pm at United Funeral Service with burial at Old Glenfield Cemetery. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Bro. Dan Darling will officiate. United Funeral Service is honored to be entrusted with these services.
