Melba Chadwick (Collins), age 98, of Dallas, GA passed away Thursday, December 5, 2024 peacefully at her home. She was born on March 25, 1926 in Asbury Park, NJ and grew up during the depression, a daughter of Esther Mae Collins (Westervelt) and Lawrence Collins. Melba had five siblings; one sister, Dorothy Galloway and four brothers, Ronald, Robert, Charles and Lawrence. She was the last surviving sibling. Melba was also preceded in death by her husband, Raymond.
Melba worked for NJ Bell for several years as a switchboard operator and supervisor and then retired to raise her children. In 2004, she moved to Georgia to live with her daughter, Joy, and to be close to her brother Robert and his family.
Melba enjoyed arts and crafts, painting, ceramics and drawing. She also enjoyed playing cards, including Skip-bo with her brother Bob. Her favorite game was Canasta, which she played at the Paulding County Senior Center. She was known as a shrewd card player. Dancing was also a favorite activity. She was always the first to get to the dance floor.
Melba’s most treasured pursuit, however, was traveling. She travelled to every state, including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as other countries and went on many cruises and road trips with relatives and friends.
Melba was always adventurous, riding horses and even taking scuba lessons and diving when she was in her 50’s. She had a wish to parachute jump when she was in her 90’s, but was unable to.
Those who knew Melba will remember her feisty, independent and adventurous nature. She lived a long and full life and will be sorely missed.
Melba leaves behind a daughter, Joy Lupo, a son, Raymond and three grandchildren, Melissa, Andreea and Kailey, as well as one great granddaughter, Kylee. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.
