Melba Standifer was born on May 28, 1950, in Middlesboro, Kentucky. She is one of four children born from the union of Benton and Gladys (Cupp) Standifer. When she was a child, her family moved to Monroe, Michigan, where she attended and graduated from Monroe High school. She then enrolled in an apprenticeship to become a licensed cosmetologist. She thrived in this industry for decades and made many friends along the way.
She loved to cook for her family and southern comfort food was her specialty. In her early years, Melba enjoyed travel with friends, cruises were her favorite.
In quiet moments, Melba sought the company of books. Romance novels held a special place in her heart, offering her a canvas upon which to dream and wander. Her home was lined with shelves and boxes, overflowing with tales of love, adventure, and mystery.
Melba also enjoyed the thrill of chance. Her visits to the casino were a vibrant contradiction to her otherwise serene hobbies. With a keen eye and a careful strategy, she played the slot machines, reveling in the anticipation and joy that accompanied each pull of the lever. True to form, Melba knew when to stop-a trait rare and wise in the world of gambling-often walking away as soon as fortune favored her.
Melba Ish, age 75, passed away at ProMedica Monroe Regional hospital surrounded by her loved ones on June 9, 2025, at 2:23pm. In addition to her passing, she is preceded by her parents.
Left to cherish her memory, she leaves her daughter: Kim (Shawn Huff) Ish and son: Tim Ish.
No public services are scheduled at this time. Her care was entrusted to Merkle Funeral Service, South Monroe; 14567 South Dixie Highway; Monroe, Michigan 48161 (734) 241-7070. Cremation will follow at Covenant Cremation of Erie, Michigan, a division of Merkle Enterprises, Inc.
