Melvin was born at Charity Hospital on July 10, 1964, in New Orleans, Louisiana to Marion Roberts and Melvin Canty. He attended McDonogh 35 in New Orleans and credits the teachers at the College Preparatory High School with changing his life for the better. Melvin joined the ARMY in August of 1983. He was everything ARMY. He received several military awards and, at the rank of Sergeant he received an honorable discharge. Melvin attended Southern University and transferred to Georgia State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1992. Melvin became a MARTA officer in Atlanta and retired as a Federal Investigator.
Melvin loved Football, cooking, the military and travel. His favorite team was the New Orleans Saints. If you needed any statistics, baby Melvin could quote it. Melvin was preceded in death by his grandparents Henrietta (Patterson) and Joseph Herman Roberts, parents Marion Roberts and Melvin Canty, and one brother Frank Holden. He leaves to mourn son, Cameron Canty, brothers Reginald Holden and Leander Raphael Jr. along with a host of family and friends. Cremation has already taken place.
