Melvin Hellert Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Mitchell-Wiedefeld Funeral Home, Inc. on Jun. 23, 2025.
In Loving Memory of
Melvin Gustave Hellert, Jr.
October 11, 1940 – June 23, 2025
Melvin Gustave Hellert, Jr., beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, creativity, and quiet wisdom.
Born on October 11, 1940, Mel lived a life shaped by curiosity, intellect, and quiet strength. He graduated from the University of Detroit, where he studied architecture-a field that allowed him to combine his deep love of math, physics, and artistic design. As an architect, Mel saw the world in both structure and soul, finding meaning in lines, balance, and beauty.
He was also a talented artist and cartoonist, using pen and ink to express humor and insight, and often leaving those around him with a smile.
Mel was a longtime and devoted member of St. James Episcopal Church Monkton, where he sang in the choir with his good friend Henry Chen. A man of steadfast faith, he was also an active member of the Cursillo community. De Colores!
Mel shared a joyful and deeply connected life with his beloved wife, Jennifer Jane Hellert ("Jennie"). Together they hiked the NCR Trail, rode bicycles through the Maryland countryside, and took long road trips that turned everyday moments into lasting memories. His favorite destination was Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural masterpiece in Pennsylvania-a place where structure and nature coexisted in perfect harmony.
He also found peace and happiness at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where he swam with ease, rowed a canoe with grace, and soaked in the beauty of coastal life.
Mel is survived by his loving wife, Jennie; his brother, William Edward Hellert; his sister-in-law, Faith Eveline Wheeler; his niece, Stephanie Lauren Hellert; and his great nephews Jonah Hellert (Christie) and Marcel Christie.
He will be remembered for his gentleness, his intellect, his deep faith, and the quiet joy he brought to the world. His legacy is not only found in the buildings he helped shape, but in the lives he touched, the laughter he inspired, and the love he gave so freely.
"Well done, good and faithful servant."
-Matthew 25:23
