SHELBY: Melvin Charles Kale, born on January 24, 1944, in Cleveland County, North Carolina, completed his earthly journey on August 28, 2025, in the same county that was his lifelong home. At the age of 81, Melvin's life was marked by dedication to his family, his country, and his community.

A proud graduate of Shelby High School, Class of 1963, Melvin furthered his education at Cleveland Community College, earning two associate degrees and accumulating additional college credits at Limestone College in Gaffney, South Carolina. His commitment to learning was a testament to his belief in the power of education.

In 1966, Melvin answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Army and serving as a Specialist E9 during the Vietnam War. His courageous service from 1966 to 1968 was a period of great pride, reflecting his steadfast devotion to duty and country.

Following his military service, Melvin embarked on a long and fulfilling career with Fiber Industries, where he worked for 38 years as a tech service representative. Upon retiring, he relished his time as a "happily retired" individual, channeling his energy into his passions and family.

Melvin was a devoted husband to Janice Kale, his beloved wife of 62 years, with whom he built a family steeped in love and mutual respect. He was an ardent sports enthusiast, cheering passionately for the Carolina Tar Heels, the Carolina Panthers, and the Atlanta Braves. An avid golfer, Melvin found joy in the camaraderie and challenges of the sport. His love for food was well known, often sharing delightful meals with family and friends.

Deeply embedded in his community, Melvin was a long-standing member of Bethel Baptist Church in Shelby, North Carolina. His faith was unwavering, and he actively participated in church activities, offering his support and guidance to those around him. Additionally, Melvin held memberships with Gideon International and the American Legion Post 82 VFW in Shelby, demonstrating his commitment to service beyond his military years.

Melvin is preceded in death by his parents, Evelyn White Kale and Albert Howard Kale, his daughter, Jennifer Kale, and his brother, Jimmy Kale. He leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication, survived by his cherished wife, Janice Kale, and their children, Gina Hallman, Greg Kale, and wife, Susan, and Jeff Kale, and his wife, Julie. His grandchildren, Darin Hallman (Blake), David Hallman (Kara), Katie Kale, Jacob Kale, and Jennifer Kale, along with his great-granddaughter, Penny Hallman, will continue to honor his memory and the values he instilled.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Melvin's life at a service on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Bethel Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, offering an opportunity to share memories and support.
