Honoring the Life of Melvin Jelean Darden Nealy

The third of 10 children, Melvin Jelean was born to Linnie L. Darden, Sr. and Victoria Flakes on June 17, 1932 in Industry, Tx. The family eventually moved to Galveston where she graduated from Central High School. She then pursued her bachelor's and master's degrees in education while attending Prairie View A&M University.

Melvin's mother, Victoria, introduced her to Carnell Nealy, and they were united in Holy Matrimony on June 18, 1954. To this 59-year union, Carnell and Melvin Jelean were abundantly blessed with their children, Carnell Jr., Vickie Rene', Charles Earl, and Otis Elijah.

The Nealys faithfully served the Lord at several congregations:

Avenue K Church of Christ in Galveston;

League City Church of Christ;

MLK Blvd Church of Christ in Bryan, Tx.

They last served at the Westward St. Church of Christ in Texas City. Melvin felt especially honored and blessed to have taught a generation of young women as they learned from her journey with Christ.

For several decades, her dedication to teaching, along with her love for her students still has a continuing impact to many throughout the Hitchcock and LaMarque school districts.

Melvin Jelean was devoted to her husband Carnell Sr. until his passing on January 1, 2014. She is also preceded in death by her parents, Linnie L. Darden Sr., and Victoria Darden; brothers Nathaniel, Linnie L. Jr., Paul, Jeff, Charles, and Otis. She is also preceded by one sister, Jean. She is survived by her eldest and youngest sisters, Clarissa Morrow (Georgia) and Charlene Hunter (Nevada), respectively.

Melvin's memory will be cherished and her legacy continued by her children Carnell Jr. (Olivette), Vickie, Charles Sr. (Deandra) and Otis (Karen). She has been richly blessed with the affectionate love of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless faithful friends.
