Melvin Vernon Tanton, Jr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2024, in
Rockwall, Texas, at the age of 90. Born on November 6, 1934, in Greenville, Texas, to Melvin Vernon Tanton, Sr. and Zora (Hilburn) Tanton, Melvin's life was one marked by dedication, warmth, and an unwavering love for his family.
Melvin's journey began in the heart of Texas, where he grew up alongside his siblings, forging bonds and memories that would last a lifetime. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Margrette Fouse and Ruth Archer, and his brothers Morris "Billy" Tanton, Wayne Tanton, Jerry Tanton and Daughter in-law, Sharon Tanton.
On November 27, 1954, in Durant, Oklahoma, Melvin married the love of his life, Bobbie Louise (Ethridge) Tanton. Their union was blessed with three sons: Billy, Larry, and Keith. Melvin's legacy is carried on by his beloved wife, Bobbie, their children, and a lineage of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to his life. He is survived by his wife Bobbie; son, Billy Tanton and wife Kelli; son, Larry Tanton; son, Keith Tanton, grandchildren; Stephanie Smith and her husband Doug, Wendy Tanton, and Jessica Bates and her husband Kelly; great-grandchildren Grant Godwulf and his wife KelseaMae, Sarah Fain and her husband Baily, Ashtin Cortez and her husband Rudy, Madison Tanton, Logan Tew, Kaydence Roundtree, and Makena Bates; his sister, Linda Causey and her husband James; and seven adored great-great-grandchildren Bryleigh, Raiden, Noah, Ellie, Silas, Kylie, and Aurora.
A dedicated worker, Melvin spent his career in industrial maintenance, retiring in 1996. His commitment to his profession was equaled only by his commitment to his family and community. Throughout his life, Melvin was an active participant in various associations, contributing his time and skills to better the lives of those around him. He was a member of Chisholm Baptist Church.
Melvin's interests were diverse and centered around the great outdoors. He was an avid boater and fisherman, finding solace and excitement in the tranquility of nature. RV-ing and traveling were among his favorite pastimes, as they allowed him to explore new places and create unforgettable memories with his loved ones. Northern Arkansas held a special place in his heart, where he enjoyed trout fishing and the serene beauty of the region for many years. In more recent years, he spent time at Lake Fork fishing with his son, Keith. He enjoyed playing FarmTown with friends on Facebook, pizza and football nights, and spending time with family.
Those who knew Melvin will remember him for his generous spirit, his warm smile, and the wisdom he shared. He was a man who lived his life with purpose and joy, always ready to lend a hand or offer a word of encouragement. His presence was a comfort, and his influence will continue to be felt by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Melvin's life was a testament to the values he held dear-family, hard work, and the pursuit of happiness. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take solace in the countless memories and the enduring impact he has left on our lives.

Melvin's visitation will take place from 6 – 8 PM on Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at Reflections Chapel – Rest Haven Rockwall. A service will be held the following day, Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at 2 PM in Reflections to celebrate Melvin's life, where family and friends will gather to share stories, laughter, and tears, commemorating a man who was truly one of a kind. Melvin Vernon Tanton, Jr.'s legacy will live on, not only in the lineage he leaves behind but in the countless lives he enriched with his presence. Rest in peace, dear Melvin, until we meet again.
