Merilyn Yvonne Anderson was born on Saturday, September 23, 1950, in Savannah, Georgia, to the late Earl Anderson and Willie Mae Anderson. She moved with her family to New York City in 1958 at the age of eight , where she grew up and later pursued her education. Merilyn graduated from York College/CUNY, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature.

She dedicated 22 years of service to AT&T; and while she performed her work duties diligently, having come of age during the social and political upheaval of the 1960’s and 1970’s, Merilyn’s real passion was advocating for others. She served as a CWA union representative, a shop steward (and an all-around thorn in the side of AT&T management) before her retirement. During those years she was also politically active in the New York Democratic Party.

Beyond her professional life, Merilyn lived out her Christian faith with devotion and service. She served for many years as a secretary, missionary board member, and Sunday School Teacher at Evangel Baptist Church and later Valley Stream Baptist Church in Queens, New York.

In 2020, after pandemic restrictions were lifted, Merilyn relocated to Las Cruces, New Mexico, with her brother Vinson Anderson, where she continued to live a life centered in faith, family, and service. Merilyn was a bright light in this world—faithful, generous, and devoted to God and those she loved. She touched countless lives with her presence, encouragement, and kindness.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Earl Anderson and Willie Mae Anderson (née Thomas) and her brother, Gregory L. Anderson. Merilyn leaves behind to mourn her loss and cherish her memory her devoted brother, Vinson Anderson of Las Cruces, New Mexico; her loving sister, Audrey Anderson of Gretna, Louisiana as well as 7 nieces and nephews; 11 grand-nieces and nephews; 10 great-grand-nieces and nephews, along with a host of cousins, extended family and dear friends who were blessed by her life.

Merilyn’s sunset came peacefully on Friday, August 15, 2025. Though she will be deeply missed, her light and legacy will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Rest in Peace, our beloved sister.
