Merle Horton, Jr., a devoted husband, proud father, loyal brother, cherished grandfather and great-grandfather, and faithful friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. A man of deep faith, unwavering work ethic, and quiet strength, Merle’s legacy of love, dedication, and integrity will live on through all who knew and loved him.
Born in Indianapolis to Merle Horton, Sr. and Mervin Pearl (Britt) Horton, Merle graduated from Arsenal Technical High School, where he excelled as a three-sport athlete, lettering in wrestling, pole vault, and playing tight end on the football team. His competitive spirit and discipline followed him throughout life.
On November 17, 1951, Merle married the love of his life, Nora Irene “Reenie” (Wolford) Horton. Their union, just one month shy of 69 years, was a testament to enduring love and commitment. Shortly after their wedding, Merle was drafted into the United States Marine Corps, proudly serving his country with honor and distinction.
Following his service, Merle returned home and built his own successful company, Horton Masonry. A master of his trade and a respected leader, Merle at one point employed 38 men. His business was truly a family affair, with Reenie managing the books and each of his children lending a hand, learning the value of hard work and the pride of craftsmanship from him.
Beyond his work, Merle loved the game of golf. It brought him joy, peace, and connection—and was a passion he carried throughout his life.
Merle was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Reenie; his parents, Merle Sr. and Mervin Pearl; his son, Larry Horton; son-in-law, Larry Duke; grandson-in-law, David Ritchie; and siblings Dorothy Mangus, Bettie Jean Horton, Mary Cartwright, Carole Windhorst, and David Horton.
He is survived by his loving children: Pam (Larry) Jensen, Rick Horton, and Judy Duke; his siblings: Barbara Lowe, Jerry (Shirley) Horton, and Donn Horton; his grandchildren: Stephanie Ritchie, Brad (Rachael) Jensen, Chris (Katie) Horton, Devin Horton, and Autumn (Todd) Strong; and his great-grandchildren: Hope, Raeleigh, Elyana, Camden, Mitchell, and Andi.

2 Timothy 4:7–8 "I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness that the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that great day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his glorious return."
Merle lived a life of purpose and devotion to his faith, his family, and his work. His hands built homes, but his heart built a legacy. He will be remembered always for his steady love, his strong spirit, and the many lives he shaped.
