Merle Oscar Johnson, 80, of Warrens, died Monday, January 9, 2023 at the Department of Veterans Medical Center, Tomah. He was born on January 18, 1942 to Oscar C. and Delpha (Nerum) Johnson. Merle was a member of Mankato High School graduating class of 1960. Following gradation Merle had enlisted into the United States Air Force. He was united in marriage to Sharon (Blasing) Johnson on June 27, 1980 in Janesville, Minnesota. Merle and Sharon had three beautiful children Lee, Shawn, and Tracy that kept them busy. Over the years Merle had worked as a panel wire man for Kato engineering. As the years went by, you could find Merle in his garden taking care of his beloved plants. Planting was his passion, along with camping, exploring, hiking, and cooking out on an open fire. Merle was very proud of being able to accomplish hiking every state park in Minnesota, earning all his badges. Merle "Mr. Gnome" will be remembered by his easy-going personality, positive energy, and welcoming smile; he will be greatly missed by many friends and family.
He is survived by his wife Sharon Johnson, son Lee (Katie) Johnson, daughter Tracy (Thomas) Woodin, grandchildren Jacob, Aaron, Amelia, Merle, Tanner, Chip, and Caden. Siblings Sally (Charles) Smith, Vic (Mary) Johnson, Harriet (Wes) Ryden, and David (Jane Smith) Johnson. Many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his son, Shawn Johnson, parents, Oscar C. and Delpha Johnson, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lola Blasing.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, January 23, 2023, 11:00 AM. at St. Mathews Lutheran Church 425 US Highway 12, Warrens (Kirby) followed by military honors. Pastor Mark Wilkens will officiate. Burial to be held at a later date.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday at the church from 10:00AM until time of service. Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to www.sonnenburgfamilyfh.com
