Mr. McDowell passed away on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Russell Medical Center. He was born on February 25, 1952, in Tacoma, Washington to Edgar Elder McDowell and Muriel Lillan Fessenden McDowell. Mr. Merle A. McDowell, a cherished family man, respected business owner, and proud Army veteran, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025, at the age of 73. Born on February 25, 1952, Merle's life was marked by unwavering love, selfless service, and a keen intelligence that touched everyone he knew. Merle's journey began in Tacoma and later continued in Venice Beach, CA. where he grew up surrounded by his large family and parents, Edgar Elder McDowell and Muriel Lillan McDowell. Although they preceded him in death, the values they instilled in him lived on through his actions and the legacy he leaves behind. A true patriot, Merle served his country with honor and distinction in the United States Army. His experiences shaped him into a man of discipline and integrity, traits that would later define his entrepreneurial spirit. As the patent holder and owner of Mac Equipment Co., Merle's ingenuity and hard work propelled the company to international success. His leadership was not only admired but also inspired many who had the privilege of working alongside him. Merle was a beacon of love and generosity, always putting others before himself. His selflessness was evident in the way he cared for his family and friends. He is survived by his loving spouse, Leslie McDowell, of Eclectic, AL, who stood by him through life's many adventures. His children, Brandy Woodall and her husband Rick of Millbrook, AL, Frances McDowell and Bill Reed of Denver, CO, Jessica Sedgwick and her husband Gene of Prattville, AL, Bernita Galic and her husband Drazen of Portland, OR, Merle McDowell, Jr. of Madison, AL, and Luke McDowell of Memphis, TN, will forever cherish the wisdom and kindness he imparted. Merle was a proud stepfather to Joey Green and his wife Kannika of Trussville, AL, and Shannon Rich and her husband Kenneth of Cropwell, AL. His 20 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren will miss the stories and laughter that he shared at every family gathering. His brothers, David McDowell, and Pat McDowell, along with his wife Tammy, will hold dear the memories of brotherly love and camaraderie. Merle is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Merle leaves behind his beloved dog, Lucy. Merle's life was a testament to the impact one person can have on so many. His intelligence was not only evident in his business endeavors but also in the thoughtful way he approached life's challenges. Those who knew Merle will remember him as a man of great character, a loving family patriarch, and a friend who could always be counted on. As we bid farewell to Mr. Merle A.
