Merry Nelson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Iles Westover Chapel on Dec. 31, 2025.
Merry Susan Nelson, 72, passed away December 27, 2025 at MercyOne West Des Moines Medical Center in West Des Moines. Her funeral will be at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, January 3, 2026 at New Hope Assembly of God Church, where her family will greet friends beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Susie Nelson was born on December 13, 1953, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Donald and Beryl (Fridley) Ruess. Raised on a family farm in eastern Iowa, she developed a deep and abiding love for rural life that shaped her joyful spirit.

A pioneering homeschool mother in the Des Moines area, Susie devoted herself to educating her children at home with faith and dedication long before it became widespread.

Throughout her career, Susie devoted herself to caring for others-first providing in-home daycare, then serving in collections and as a secretary in the litigation department at John Deere, and later returning to compassionate caregiving with Home Instead until her retirement.

Her childhood on the farm kindled lifelong passions: riding horses, tending beautiful gardens (with a strong dislike for weeds), sewing, and baking. Athletic and spirited, Susie delighted in playing pickleball and cheering at sporting events. An avid card player, she cherished membership in several card clubs. Music filled her heart-she sang with grace and played the piano beautifully.

Above all, Susie treasured her family, pouring boundless love into her roles as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and daughter. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life; she served faithfully as a church volunteer, women's ministry leader, Bible study teacher, and spiritual mentor to many.

Susie is lovingly remembered by her husband, Lenny; children: Erin (Brian) Dougherty, Laura (Isaac) Emerson, and Jacob Nelson; grandchildren: Olivia (Owen) Towers, Kate Dougherty, Jack Dougherty, Noah Dougherty, Jenna (Josh) Luna, Jessica (Nolan) Baethke, Jorja Emerson, Jersie Emerson, and Lucy Nelson; great-grandchildren: Laker Luna, Emerson Luna, and Royce Luna; and brothers Ron (Diane) Ruess of Anamosa and Dan (Cindy) Ruess of West Liberty.

Lenny, the Ruess's and all your families, so sorry to read this. I remember Merry Sue as that spunky gal from high school, always smiling, and usually laughing about something. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you as you deal with these first difficult days and weeks ahead. - -Janine (Smith) Johnson, (former classmate of Lenny's), Des Moines, Iowa

Merry Sue was a dear classmate from West liberty high school class of 1972. I always remember her smile. She was so proud of her kids and grandkids. Her family and her faith brought her great joy. She will be missed, but remembered in our hearts with love
