Michael Ames Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Evans Funeral Chapel - Anacortes on Jan. 24, 2026.
Michael Neely Ames, 81, a lifelong resident of Anacortes, Washington, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 12, 2026. He was born on February 10, 1944, in Anacortes to Albert "Porky" and Cora (Duteau) Ames, Mike grew up deeply rooted in the community that remained his home for most of his 81 years.

Mike graduated from Anacortes High School and then proudly served his country in the United States Army. He worked as a medic during his service, stationed in both Alaska and San Francisco, before his honorable discharge.

Following his military service, Mike built a varied and hardworking career as a self-employed businessman. He took on trucking and freelanced in the construction industry while in Oregon, later returning to Anacortes where he became co-owner and partner of Jerry's Used Cars with his dad. In his later years, he pursued stock trading, a profession he enjoyed from the comfort of his home. Mike remained self-employed from the time he left the Army until his retirement.

Mike found joy in simple, meaningful pastimes. He loved spending time at his property in Skagit River Woods, where he could enjoy the outdoors and the quiet of nature. He cherished helping his father in the family pawn shop in eastern Washington, memories he carried fondly throughout his life. Some of his happiest moments were spent at family cookouts at his sister Kathy's home, sharing food, stories, and laughter with his family.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Alan, and his nephew Landon Strickert. He is survived by his daughter, Rene Ames; his sister Kathy Wiggins, best friend, Dick Carroll; and his niece Rhonda (Tom Jenson). He also leaves behind extended family and friends who will remember him for his independence, his sense of humor and steady presence. His memory will be held dearly by all who knew him.
