Michael Craig Asselin lived a rich and generous life as a devoted husband, father, brother, and
friend to many. Known for his quick wit and a ready smile. He was the first to lend a hand (or a
power tool), and the last to turn down a beer or a cribbage match.
Born and raised in Bucksport, ME, Mike brought equal parts mischief and charm into the lives of
his parents, Maurice and Sylvia, and his siblings, Robert and Margaret. During his senior year of
high school, the family moved to Sartell, MN, where he planted new roots before attending
North Dakota State University, where he earned a Mechanical Engineering degree and cheered
for the Bison.
In 1986, Mike married the love of his life, Cari. Together, they shared a life full of adventure,
laughter, and unwavering love. They raised their daughters, Sara and Amanda, in a series of
memorable places: Jamestown, ND (1986); Sartell, MN (1990); Lakeside, AZ (2002); and
Brainerd, MN (2005). In later years, as empty nesters, Mike and Cari moved to Kalamazoo, MI
(2018), where they reignited their sense of exploration before settling in Nevis, MN, where
Mike could take anyone for a boat ride on the beloved, Big Blue.
He lived by the motto "work hard, play hard," and he truly did both. His 34-year career in the
paper industry reflected his exceptional skills as an expert engineer and problem-solver. Early in
his career, he designed a patented blade, and continued to have much success and made many
friends in the paper mills through the years. In 2018, he was thrilled to lead the project building
his first paper machine, which was truly a dream come true. For 10 years (1991-2001), he
served his community as a member of the Sartell Volunteer Fire Department, building lifelong
friendships. Throughout the years, he had a special knack for fixing just about anything, as long
as he had a 2x4, plenty of duct tape, and a steady supply of Band-Aids.
Whether entertaining family and friends, boating and camping along the Mississippi, or
exploring National and State Parks, Mike brought energy and joy. He loved ice fishing, hunting,
challenging anyone to a friendly (and competitive) game of cribbage, and had a steady supply of
pranks. Mike and Cari hosted many gatherings full of stories, laughter, and he shared the kind
of wisdom that only comes after so many stitches.
He taught us how to fix just about anything, how not to take life too seriously, and that showing
up matters more than getting it perfect.
Mike passed away at home on July 9, 2025, surrounded by family and love - exactly how he
wanted it.
He'll be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and quoted often.
Mike is survived by his wife Cari Asselin (Bensen), daughters Sara Deist (Sean) and Amanda
Nordick (Kraig), siblings Robert Asselin (Darlene) and Margaret Woods (Matt), and nieces Genna
Asselin, Marielle Asselin and Mackenna Woods. He is preceded in death by Maurice and Sylvia
Asselin (Cozzi).
A celebration of life is currently pending.
