Wow, I was shocked when I heard the news. My condolences go out to his family and friends, he will be remembered and missed by many, especially me.

It was hard to think about where to start with my message, I won't be able to include all our friendship but I'll start in 8th grade at Hillcrest Middle school, 1978, where we first became friends.

Mike was a big Oakland Raiders fan even then, his favorite player was Ken "The Snake" Stabler, and appropriately he was the first person I knew who had a snake for a pet, a boa named Noah.

During that same time maybe 1979, unknown to me and him and after they had both been divorced, his dad and my mom went out on a date! He and I would joke years later about how we were almost brothers and what that would have been like. Since I was two months older I insisted he would have been a great little brother!

At Mauldin High School we stayed friends and shared the same love for music, a highlight was going to see Van Halen in Charlotte with our friends, and seemed to have the same sense of humor, we could always make each other laugh.

After high school and college we lost touch with each other but reconnected where he was living in Simpsonville and our friendship was like we had never been apart.

I lived up the street from him in Simpsonville for two years and would walk down to his place and we would hang out and talk. Drinking beer, watching football, listening to music and cracking each other up with jokes and stories of our lives. He came to my mother's funeral when my world came crashing down and I will be eternally grateful. I went with him to his father's military memorial in Anderson, along with his mother and sister, when he wasn't sure he wanted to go but later was glad that we did.

He loved his dad and his family and was thankful for his friends at Sherby's who helped him through some tough times. He had a good friend and former fraternity brother in Greg Fant. They were roommates for a while near the end of Mike's life and he was grateful for his friendship.

The things I will most remember about Mike are being able to talk about music we both loved and making each other laugh, in good and bad times. We especially loved Jimmy Buffett and he told me one time that he liked the song "Beyond the End" where Roy Orbison is singing a high falsetto and I hope he is enjoying that now, via con Dios mi amigo.
