Michael Brian Carey, age 56, of Houston, Texas, passed away on May 11, 2024, after a short,
valiant fight with an aggressive cancer. He is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Carey, Jr.
and is survived by his mother Sylvia Carey, his daughter Reagan Carey, his sons Nicholas
Carey and Shea Carey, his fiancée Josefina Fernandez, his sister Stephanie Robertson (Rich),
his brothers Patrick Carey and Christopher Carey, Sr. (Colleen), and nieces and nephews.
Mike was born in Beaumont, Texas in 1967. Mike graduated high school in Pennsylvania and
Averett College in Virginia, where he also began his studies and training in aviation. He was
hired as a First Officer for Continental Express, and later became a Captain of its Embraer
ERJ145 aircraft. Mike continued his aviation career with Continental Airlines attaining the
position of Captain of its Boeing 737 aircraft and continuing in the same capacity with United
Airlines subsequent to its merger with Continental Airlines. Mike loved his career in aviation as
it allowed him to travel the world and experience its many wonders. Like his father, Mike was
an avid Purdue University, Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Steelers sports fan. Mike enjoyed
spending time with his family and friends.
Mike’s family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, June 17th, at Powell Funeral
Home, 1603 Wilborn Avenue, South Boston, Virginia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 18th, at St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church, 800 John
Randolph Boulevard, South Boston, Virginia.
Following the Mass, the family will have a gathering to further celebrate Mike’s life at
Berry Hill Resort and Conference Center, 3105 River Road, South Boston, Virginia.
Mike will be laid to rest in the Town of Halifax Cemetery in a private ceremony.
