Michael Barron Cockerham, age 76, of Elkin, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on May 2, 2025. He was born in Surry County on March 24, 1949 to John Bert Cockerham Sr. and Margretha White Cockerham. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his children, Matthew Cox (Amanda), Jennifer Casstevens (Dale), Mitchell Cockerham, and Matthew Cockerham (Cameron), his grandchildren Elliot Cox (Jasmine), Alex Cox (Grace), Chacey Cox and Reid Cockerham and great granddaughter Aria Cox; his siblings Cathy Taylor (Louis), John Bert Cockerham Jr. (Tina) and Beth Snow (Dale). He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and great nieces. Mike was a Veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze star for valor in combat. He was a retired Mechanical Foreman and was a lifelong farmer of several crops and livestock. One of his most favorite things in life was riding, training and caring for horses. He was known amongst those closest to him for his storytelling, infectious smile and contagious laugh. He loved music and enjoying life. Mike grew up around Mitchell River, in the Zephyr community, and graduated from Surry Central High School in 1967. He will be greatly missed by his friends and his family. The family would like to give a special thank you to Jill Caudle for being such a great caregiver and friend to him and to Mountain Valley Hospice. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis TN 38105, and/or Mountain Valley Hospice, PO Box 325, Dobson NC 27017. A private service will be held by family at a later date with Pastor Chris Davis officiating and Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post # 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post # 9436 Moody-Davis Funeral Service in Dobson is serving the Cockerham family
