Dr. Michael D. Cooney August 5, 1949 – May 9, 2025
With unimaginable sadness, we share the passing of our beloved father, Dr. Michael D. Cooney of Cedar Point, NC, on May 9, 2025. Michael passed away peacefully with friends and family by his side.
Memorial service details are not yet finalized, but we will share arrangements with friends and family as soon as they are available.
Michael Daniel Cooney was born on August 5, 1949, in Philadelphia, PA, to Paul and Liselotte Cooney. He was a beloved son, father, grandfather, brother, and a psychologist with a Ph.D. in Psychology. He is survived by his children, Devin Cooney of Raleigh and his wife Keri Voke, and Megan Boone of Swansboro and her husband Cameron Boone; his cherished granddaughter, Kamryn Boone of Swansboro; his sister, Paulette Skeen of Thomasville; his former wife, Teri Stock; his niece, Mandy Skeen; his nephew, Asa Cooney; and his dearest friends, Dave and Ruth Hough, Steve and Cyndy Wilson, and Linda Cooney. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Steve Cooney of Thomasville, NC.
Mike began his life in Philadelphia and eventually made his way to High Point, NC. He pursued higher education with great dedication, earning degrees from ECU, Appalachian State, and Florida State, and ultimately a Ph.D. in Psychology. He married and raised two children in Cedar Point, NC, where he also built a remarkable career. For 25 years, Mike served at the Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune, dedicating his professional life to helping thousands of active-duty service members confront and manage mental health challenges. His compassion, commitment, and impact will be deeply missed by the community he served.
After retiring in 2017, Mike enjoyed traveling to visit his children until they both returned home to North Carolina in 2023. In recent years, he treasured the time spent with his family, especially his granddaughter Kamie, with whom he shared a special bond. When he wasn't entertaining a toddler or catching up with his kids, Mike could often be found enjoying a beer and a spirited conversation with friends at the Growler.
Finally, as his children, we-Megan and Devin-want to say that our dad was not just an incredible man; he was an extraordinary father. He went above and beyond every day to make sure we felt loved, supported, and cared for, well into our adult lives. Though his passing came far too soon, the lessons he taught us and the wisdom he shared will stay with us always. He will be missed beyond measure.
In lieu of flowers and in honor of Dr. Michael D. Cooney's career and Mental Health Awareness Month, donations may be made to the PTSD Foundation of America.

Cooney, the lessons learned from you at Lejeune are being paid forward as we prepare the next generation of clinicians to do what you taught us to do. For you, there will be no more homes to rebuild after the storm. Rest easy, brother. CDR SPC
