Michael C. Costa

Michael C. Costa, 76, of Liverpool, NY, beloved husband of Anne M. Costa, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, after a brief illness, at Hospice & Palliative Care of the Piedmont in Greenwood, SC.

Born March 9, 1949, in Detroit, MI, he was the son of the late Charles Michael Costa and Bernice Shanahan Costa. Michael was a graduate of Western Illinois University and after a brief career in retail, he found his calling as a Group Home Manager with Catholic Charities/Toomey Residential in Syracuse NY, from which he retired. Michael was a fierce advocate for the downtrodden, especially children who were abused or neglected. Mike often touted a tough exterior but he fooled no one with it. His heart was a marshmallow and we all knew it.

Michael was an avid golfer and a longtime member of several golf leagues at Sunset Ridge and Radisson. He was a loyal Detroit Tigers and Chicago Bears fan. Mike was happiest when he could be near water, the ocean and especially Lake Huron-where he spent his summers in Lexington, MI. He was a communicant of the Liverpool Catholic Community at Christ the King (a church he loved) and Pope John Paul XXIII parishes.

Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Anne Costa; a daughter, the light of his life, Mary Grace Heitzenrater (Joshua) of Ninety Six, SC; two beloved grandchildren, Mia Rose Heitzenrater and John Anthony Heitzenrater; a sister, Ellen Hardy (David) of Syracuse, NY; three brothers, Lou Costa (Shari) of Illinois, John Costa of California, and Mark Costa of Illinois; a brother-in-law, Chuck Normanly and many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Cathy Schaeburg and Patricia Normanly.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Liverpool Catholic Community in Liverpool, NY, at a future date.
