With a heart as generous as his mind was brilliant, Michael John Dunning (Mike), passed away on September 6, 2025. Born on November 12, 1958, in Holland, MI, Mike was a beacon of light and a source of endless amusement for those fortunate enough to know him. He was a man whose empathetic nature was as renowned as his wit and intelligence, and his absence leaves a void that words cannot adequately convey.
Mike's career as a Nuclear Physicist was not just a job for him, it was a calling. Through his work, he contributed significantly to the scientific community and dedicated his life to building a better future for the next generation. His intelligence, however, was not just confined to his profession. Mike was also a skilled woodworker and an incredible cook, often delighting his family and friends with his wooden creations and spreading laughter while cooking with family. He had a passion for fantasy baseball, the Chicago Cubs, and University of Michigan football, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family and his beloved dog. No matter where he was, Michael's heart was always at home with his family. Albert Einstein once said, "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile," and Mike embodied this philosophy every day of his life.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Eveline Dube; his devoted daughter, Emily (David) Dunning; his mother, Norma (Harwell) Dunning; and his sisters, Laura and Kathy Dunning. He was preceded in death by his father, Harwell Dunning.
There will be a Lay-In service for Mike on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at 1:00pm PST at Return Home (4146 B Place Northwest, Auburn, Washington, 98001). Services are under the direction of Return Home. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Hospice of the Northwest or the Alvord Brain Tumor Center at the University of Washington in memory of Michael.
Please join us in celebrating Mike's life by leaving your memories and uploading photos to his memorial page. His legacy is not just in the work he did or the hobbies he enjoyed, but also in the love and laughter he shared with us all. It is this legacy that will keep him alive in our hearts and minds forever.
