Michael A. Ferrero, age 73, passed away suddenly on Friday, January 17, 2025.
Mike was the owner/operator of Fat Jack's Comicrypt, which he operated for almost 50 years. It was his pride and joy and he devoted his life to the business. He gave 100% and more of himself to work and to bringing joy to those around him. Tens of thousands of people shopped at Fat Jack's over the years and he touched every one of them, day in and day out.
To say that Mike was one in a million is an understatement. He was a gentle and kind soul. His character was to treat everyone better than he ever expected to be treated. He was always there for his family, friends, and customers, who ultimately became family and friends.
Mike touched so many people as a true person, a true friend, and a true brother. His light shined from within and it was palpable. Mike was very private, but every one of his family, friends, and customers knew that he was always there for them no matter what.
Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Jonri J. (nee Bilyi); his mother, Catherine M. (nee Simpler); his father, Louis Ferrero; his brother, Thomas P. Ferrero; his brother, John J. Zebuski; and his brother-in-law, George J. Lord.
Mike is survived by his sister, Carol A. Lord; his brother, Louis N. Ferrero; nieces, nephews, and many friends, all of whom loved him dearly. Mike will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and the entire community that he was a part of and dedicated his life to through Fat Jack's. There will never be another person like Michael. God got a great one.
Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral service on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul (Main Church), 18th & Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA. Visitation will be held in the Main Church from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, PA.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Mike's memory to Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center, 125 County House Road, Blackwood, NJ 08012, (856) 401-1300, www.homewardboundnj.org
Arrangements by Dinan Funeral Home, Philadelphia, PA. Condolences may also be sent to www.dinanfuneralhome.com.

So many stories I could tell. All revolved around such a great man. He inspired and brought life into the comics we read and loved. You are missed.

I was a customer for 48 years. Spent some of the best times of my life at your store, Mike. I will never forget you, Dan Smeddy, Dan McIntyre, and all the rest, including, of course, the one and only Beth. It all ended way too quickly.

Mike, just stopping by to hope you are resting in peace. Many years ago, when you opened your first store on 20th Street, directly across my Comic Book shop - 'Collector's Corner' I thought of you as competition.
After I left, you moved into my store then eventually over to Sansom street.
I would, occasionally, stop by and we got to be good friends because of our mutual love of comics.
When I heard of the impending closure, I was more than happy to contribute to your fundraiser which kept the store 'alive' for another year or two.
I was saddened to hear of your eventual need to close the store and even Moreso after hearing of your untimely passing.
Again, rest in peace, my friend. You were truly a superhero as much as the characters we loved in the comics.

I was a frequent customer at Fat Jack's and Mike was always pleasant and made you feel very welcome. I believe the shop reflected his warm spirit and was always available to help you or answer any question you may have. I spent a lot of time there and got to know Mike. He will be missed by the Comic Book community. He was truly a unique individual and really care for his customers and the hobby. Farewell Mike and have a great journey into the spiritual world.

So sorry to hear about Mike's passing. I've known him since I was a teenager. I worked at the warehouse with George, in the Center City store sorting the weekly books for the other stores & at the Oaklyn store for many years. He was a great guy and will be missed.
