Michael Gillespie Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Logan Funeral Home, Inc. - Philadelphia on Aug. 22, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Michael Gillespie, also known by his loved ones as Benji, was a man whose vibrant spirit and infectious laughter left a memorable mark on the hearts of all who knew him. Born on December 9, 1963 to the late James and Gloria (nee Guest) Gillespie, Michael's journey through life was one filled with an abundance of joy, music, and love. It is with heavy hearts we announce that he passed away on August 20, 2025. Loving husband of Mary Ellen (nee Reynolds) Gillespie; father of Michael, Bridget (Michael Laurie), and Katie (George) Fiocca. Loving grandfather of Marley, Georgie, and Teagan. Brother of Barbara, Patricia, Rose, John and the late James "Jimbo" Gillespie. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Benji had a deep love for his family and friends. His remarkable memory for tunes and tales earned him the affectionate title of a walking encyclopedia, and his presence was a guarantee of a good time and an engaging conversation. Benji's interests were as colorful and diverse as his personality. He had an insatiable love for the thrill of the casinos, where he was known for his ability to blend in with any crowd and come out a winner. His passion for music was evident and he would often entertain friends with stories from concerts and events that he had expertly sneaked into. St. Patrick's Day was more than a holiday for Benji-it was a celebration of life, filled with laughter, music, and the company of friends.
A true intellectual at heart, Benji relished the challenge of a good Jeopardy episode, often outsmarting the contestants on screen with his quick wit and extensive knowledge. His love for ice cream was matched only by his love for crosswords, which he completed with impressive speed and accuracy. Benji's popularity was no surprise to those who knew him; he had a gift for making lasting connections and was always the best dressed, no matter the occasion.

A real life Mr. Fix it and a master of his craft. Benji took pride in his job and never missed a day of work. He held many roles but none made him light up more than his role of Pop. Benji's grandchildren were his whole world . He was their biggest fan. Sports game, school events or family game nights, Benji was always there cheering them on.
Benji was a man of many words-interesting, intelligent, and funny are but a few that best describe him. His sense of humor was as sharp as his mind, and his ability to tell a story was unmatched. He had the rare quality of making everyone feel like the most important person in the room, and his absence will leave a void that cannot be filled.

Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation 9:30 -11:15 AM Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at St. Gabriel's Church, 2917 Dickinson Street, Philadelphia, PA 19146. Followed by his Funeral Mass 11:30 AM at St. Gabriel Church

Interment at a later date.
