Michael (Mike) R. Hojohn, age 73, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 29, 2022, peering out the porch of his Canada Lake camp over the oasis of flower gardens he so meticulously and pridefully cultivated over the past 20 years.
Mike, a remarkedly rare individual -- the likes of which will be just as hard to find as the distinct treasures and antiques he keenly discovered and affectionately shared with those he loved – inspired several generations by unequivocally and unapologetically being true to his character. In fact, Mike himself noted it best at the top of his everyday to-do list notepad: "I was whom I was born to be."
Born on June 9, 1948, in Johnstown, N.Y., Mike was a graduate of Johnstown High School. Following graduation, Mike served his country by caring for his brothers and sisters in arms as a medic in Vietnam and traveled to various parts of the U.S, acquiring stories and friendships along the way. Mike eventually resettled in Fulton County where, with his forever youthful persona, served the greater community for the next several decades via many of his acquired talents, including finished carpentry, landscaping, and antiquing. Appropriately -- his good nature too large for a single community -- Mike made Palm Springs, Calif. his second home following retirement.
At heart, Mike cared greatly about the happiness and well-being of others, as countless anecdotes and stories will confirm. A model example and point of pride of Mike's selfless compassion, care and support was the time he spent caring for his grandfather, "Poppy Dick."
Mike is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and other family, friends and lovers who had the good fortune of knowing him; nearly all of whom experienced perhaps his most sincere expression of affection: An eccentric and legendary prank. In addition, Mike took great pleasure in camping, hiking, kayaking, frequenting garage sales, gardening, and hosting friends and family at his camp.
A celebration of life in Mike's memory is forthcoming with details to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, Mike's family asks that anyone affected by his passing plant a flower in his memory and take a moment to appreciate the same peace and serenity Mike had experienced when doing so himself.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 E. Main Street, Johnstown, NY.

I went to Navy Corpsman School in San Diego CA with Michael. We hit it off so well. I love in Southern California and had no idea he would spend time in Palm Springs. Michael was an awesome man.

I met Mike only once, in the summer of 2021-ten months ago. Our hosts at Canada Lake introduced us to him during a walk, then spent some time visiting with him while he gave us an in-depth tour of his "enchanted garden." Moved by his patience, humor, and pride in all his creations, I asked if I could make some photographs of him. His teasing was part of the experience, and then ... this portrait of Mike-a vision of some other, even more wonderful, garden.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of this sudden loss, and extend condolences to all his family and many friends.

His happiness came up out of the earth and flowered everywhere. I believe he is at peace in that visionary garden.
