Michael Stephen “Steve” Hughes, 72, of Weatherford, passed away at home on Thursday, February 12, 2026.
Steve was born May 1, 1953, in Fort Worth, to Thomas “Tommie” T. Hughes and Elaine Florence Hughes. As the son of an ordained minister in the Assembly of God, Steve spent much of his early childhood following his father’s ministry. In 1961, the family moved to Weatherford, where he spent most of the remainder of his life.
Steve graduated from Weatherford High School in 1972 and attended Weatherford College. He dedicated 50 years to retail management, spending most of his career with Winn-Dixie and Kohl’s. After retiring, he enjoyed traveling and was known as one of the most devoted and present grandfathers. Steve lived life fully, touching countless lives with his unconditional love and his ability to see the best in everyone he met. Those who knew him quickly recognized his greatest loves: Jesus, his family, and his friends.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Tommie and Elaine Hughes.
He is survived by the mother of his children, Cheryl Hughes; daughter, Michelle Hayes and husband, Jason; daughter, Tara Woody and husband, Chad; son, Micah Hughes and wife, Hayley; grandchildren, Elliot Hayes, Evelyn Woody, Gryffin Woody, and Everitt Hughes; brothers and sisters-in-law, Terry and Judy Hughes, Mark and Kim Hughes, and Keith and Pam Hughes; aunt, Helen Perry; uncle, John Florence; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel, in Weatherford, Texas.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 23, 2026, at the First Methodist Church, in Weatherford, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County.
