Una Susan Cockrell was born August 17, 1949 in
Weatherford, Texas to parents, Allen Ray Cockrell and Dorothy Katreen Mosley Cockrell. Her father was an engineer for an oil company, so the family had to move around a lot. That caused Susan to attend 21 schools between 1st grade and college. She was a member of the Weatherford High School graduating class of 1967. After graduation, she went on to further her education at Texas Woman's University, earning her B.S. of Nursing. Susan worked for the Department of Defense as an Overseas Diplomacy Coordinator for several years, living in Europe, California, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. In 1989, she moved to Breckenridge from Virginia Beach. While in Breckenridge, she worked as a paramedic for Stephens Memorial Hospital from 1991-1996. Then, she began working for Dr. Prater until her retirement in 2000. On February 10, 2001, Susan married Rondal Earl "Ronnie" Pendleton. And the couple enjoyed many years together until Ronnie passed in 2021.
In 1996, She was given a diagnosis of Mitochondrial Myopathy, which ultimately confined her to a wheelchair but did not slow her down. Susan became an active supporter of
The Muscular Dystrophy Association, even being awarded the 2008 Robert Ross MDA's Personal Achievement Award. She appeared on several televised telethons and volunteered for many local events. In addition to her work with MDA, she was an active member of First Methodist Church in Breckenridge. She helped with WINGS, Turkey Dinner, Bible Study, and sang in the choir, among many other areas. She also served on the building committee at FMC to help ensure remodeling met and exceeded ADA standards. Susan also volunteered elsewhere in the communities, including Eastland Memorial Hospital, The Old Jail Art Center in Albany and the Breckenridge Fine Arts Center. She loved to cook and spend time with her family and will be fondly remembered for her quick wit and wonderful sense of humor.
