Michael Jones
March 30, 1964 - March 28, 2025
Michael Jones, age 60, of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away on March 28, 2025, in Washington, D.C.
Michael, lovingly known as "Mikey" to his closest friends, was born in Belleville, Kansas, to Ronald and Mildred Jones on March 30, 1964.
Michael graduated from Kansas State University and, during his time there, studied abroad in Seville, Spain. This was the beginning of what became a lifelong passion for traveling the world.
He proudly served as a U.S. Department of State Foreign Service Specialist from July 1989, a role that included posts in Paris, France; New Delhi, India; Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and, finally, Charleston, South Carolina. After 15 years in the Foreign Service, he transitioned to the Civil Service with the State Department's Bureau of the Comptroller and Global Financial Services. He retired from his government service in December 2020 after 31 years.
Well-traveled, fluent in Spanish, and an avid baker, Michael enjoyed long weekends and international trips with friends, where great food, wine, games, and conversations were always plentiful. He loved gaming of any kind, be it Dungeons & Dragons or dominoes. Those who had the pleasure of knowing him - especially Mike Herring and Jane Bocklage, and their son, Edmond, friends he considered family - will always remember him as a fun-loving and kind person who was a joy to be around.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Chancy Jones.
A private memorial service is planned for this summer with his closest friends.
