Michael James Lowrey, 76, of Amarillo, TX passed away November 9, 2025.
Memorial service will be at 11:00 AM, Friday, November 14, 2025 at South Georgia Baptist Church, 5209 S. Georgia St. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Born December 5, 1948 on board the U.S.S. Repose Hospital Ship anchored in Tsingtao, China to Allen and Louise Lowrey.
As a child he lived in Washington D.C., Portsmouth, Virginia; Norfolk, Virginia; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Ruston, Louisiana; Simsboro, Louisiana; Columbia, Missouri; and Whitewater, Wisconsin. Mike attended Whitewater schools from 6th Grade until graduation from Whitewater High School in 1967.
Mike graduated from Louisiana Tech University with his B.S. in 1971 and was commissioned through ROTC as a 2nd Lieutenant in the USAF at that time. This is where he met his future wife, Pat, who he loved to call his little red haired girl.
While serving with the USAF Mike was stationed in California, Montana, Colorado, Missouri, The Republic of Turkey, New Mexico and Texas, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Mike proudly served the United States Air Force for 25 years.
In 1984 the family moved to Amarillo, Texas for Mike to work for Pantex and retired from there in 2011. He rose to Department Manager level. During this time at Pantex, he continued his education at West Texas A&M and Amarillo College, and received a master’s degree in Engineering Tech. Mike worked for Pantex for 27 years.
Mike always lived a life of service: Southern Baptist Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, AWANA Leader, Randall County Jail Minister, teller, usher, and missionary to various places. He was a proud and involved member of South Georgia Baptist Church.
Mike enjoyed shooting, hunting and fishing. He was the past President of the Amarillo Rifle and Pistol Club, Past Board Member of Amarillo Gun Club, and Maintenance Coordinator of Texas Panhandle Pistol Club.
Mike’s most important accomplishment: winning many people to the Lord.
Mike earned three Meritorious Service Medals, Two Commendation Medals, One Air Force Achievements Medal, Expert Marksman medal with Bronze Service Star and other medals and ribbons. He was a 100% Disabled Veteran.
More important than all of his accomplishments, awards, and accolades, Mike was an amazing husband, father, friend, and follower of Christ. His famous line that he said to everybody he came in contact with was “What do I need to be doing for you?” And he meant it. He would do anything for anybody, without wanting or expecting anything in return. Mike Lowrey was the real deal, and the world is better for having known him.
Survived by Patricia, wife of 55 years, Allen (son) of Amarillo, and Amy (daughter) of Boone, North Carolina, brothers, John and wife Linda of Madison, Wisconsin, Peter and wife Laura of Jefferson, Wisconsin and sister, Susan, of North Sioux City, South Dakota.
2800 Paramount Blvd, Amarillo, TX 79109
