Michael Brent Madsen

Our loyal husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Michael Brent Madsen, returned home peacefully to his Heavenly Father, surrounded by family, at the age of 81, from conditions incident to age. Mike was a man of deep faith, intellectual curiosity, and a strong desire to serve the Lord.

Preceded in death by his parents and his sister Pamela. Mike is survived by Joan; children Michelle (Scott) Shreeve, Nicole (Tyler) England, Angela (Jason) Boren, Ryan (Michelle) Madsen, Heather (Joel) Jensen, and Heidi (Craig) Carlston.

Born on November 24, 1943 at Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City, Mike was the son of Edwin Lund and Grace Gibson Madsen. He grew up on Princeton Avenue in Salt Lake, where he spent his childhood exploring with lifelong friends, always curious and just mischievous enough to keep life interesting. His early childhood teachers remembered him fondly as “a handful.” His early years were marked by playful mischief and riding bikes through tree-lined streets.

He excelled at East High School as a track star, and in football, and in choir as an Opera Lead, and he served as Student Body Vice President, and was crowned “Mr. Holly” at the Christmas Dance his senior year.

After high school, Mike attended the University of Utah where he served as student body officer. He earned a degree in Economics before completing an MBA, was accepted to law school (which he attended for just 1 day), before finding his true calling: medicine. He completed medical school and OB/Gyn residency at the University of Utah. After successfully obtaining his Board Certification he taught residents as part of the University of Utah clinical faculty. Later, he joined the Salt Lake Clinic where he served his patients for almost 25 years.

He met Joan Stoker at the University of Utah Business. They were engaged on Friday, September 13, 1968, and married on Friday, December 13, 1968 in the Salt Lake Temple.

Beyond medicine and church service, Mike was a man of many talents and passions. He earned his pilot’s license and flew to Mexico on his honeymoon. Other adventures included scuba diving, sailing throughout the world, snow skiing, competitive tennis, and traveling the world with Joan. Regular family vacations included Lake Powell, Palm Springs, the Tetons, and Newport Beach. He provided so many cherished memories for his children and grandchildren.

Mike lived a life of purpose and service that was profound and far-reaching. A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served a mission in England as a young man, called as Bishop to the Parley’s 3rd Ward for 5 years, and later presided over the Washington D.C. North Mission (2001-2004). He also contributed to formal humanitarian efforts for the Helping Babies Breathe program in Vietnam and Africa. His testimony of Jesus Christ was deep and sure, and he shared it most naturally through being anxiously engaged in wherever he was called. His legacy of service, resilience, faith and curiosity will forever inspire us.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel, 2895 East Creek Road, Cottonwood Heights, Utah. An evening viewing will be held on November 7, 2025 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM and again on Saturday from 10:00 to 10:45 am at the same location. Interment will take place at Memorial Mountain View Cemetery, 3115 East Bengal Blvd, Cottonwood Heights, Utah.
