I have loved Michael since we were kids growing up and singing together. He had a great sense of humor and never had a bad word to say about anyone! I loved him and still do! I pray his sisters patsie, Darlene and jojo take pride in the fact that michael was loved and admired by everyone in the music industry. Seemingly, time stood still when the phone call came, notifying me that my friend, my songwriting mentor, and the producer of my
Songwriter's CD Demo project, "Everlasting Love," had died. I remembered the words of Pastor Shirley Caesar-Williams, "We all must
go by way of the upper taker or the undertaker." I fondly remember the hours we spent in the studio on my project; countless hours of
rehearsal at the church; and coordinated travels around North Carolina, Virginia, Boston, MA, and Sydney, Australia.
Often, I've heard Michael say, "Here comes our Soprano." To the Mathis family, I offer my deepest prayers and condolences. We hurt
as you are hurting. I hope you take comfort from the song Accept What God Allows by Twinkie Clark & Bishop Richard "Mr. Clean"
White. Be encouraged.
"Not now, but in the coming years,
It may be in a brighter land,
Heaven will the mysteries unfold, ah yes,
Sometime we'll understand." Maxwell Cornelius, hymnary.org

Helen Hollins & The Helen Hollins Singers
February 22, 2023
On behalf of the Helen Hollins Singers, I offer sincere condolences to Pastor Shirley Caesar, the Mathis family, and all who ever had the opportunity to know Michael Mathis. My late husband, Bishop Milton Hollins singer/songwriter of "I Don't Know What You Come to Do" and I knew Michael and his mom Dorothy for many years when they attended Rev. Osborne's church, and my husband was also the Youth Pastor at Mt. Calvary Holy Church's headquarters on Otisfield Street in Dorchester, MA.
Michael has always been an annotated musician and therefore, in our eyes an obvious assessment to offer him the opportunity to play the organ for our group The Helen Hollins Singers in which he traveled with us for a while until his true destiny manifested during a time when Pastor Caesar and our group were recording artists on Hob Records-Scepter Records at the same time. and where Pastor Caesar crossed paths with Michael, she experienced his undeniable talent firsthand.
Anyone who truly knows Michael can attest that he is faithful to his commitments. So, when the opportunity to travel with Pastor Caesar presented itself, Michael was very torn with the decision to leave the Helen Hollins Singers and his mother in Boston. However, my husband and I sat him down in our living room and insisted that he pursue God's purpose. We encouraged him to exercise his faith and trust God and know that the opportunity to be a part of Pastor Caesar´s ministry was more significant than he could ever imagine. For we knew that he was in good hands with Pastor Shirley Caesar and that she was going to expose him to an even deeper spiritual level of commitment as well as more opportunities to experience places he had never been before because the single "No Charge" was skyrocketing on the Gospel Charts.
In retrospect, I am grateful that the Holy Ghost interceded and allowed us to release Michael during a time we needed an organist. Still, we did not allow selfishness to supersede our spiritual discernment. Today and every day, we will continue to celebrate the life of Michael Mathis. Our hearts and prayers extend to Pastor Caesar as we know how much you loved Michael as a son. Michael's smile and sincere love for God and people will forever be etched in time.
Sincerely
Helen Hollins

The last memory I have to share with Mike was when I was walking in downtown Durham around the campus and he came up to me and said hi my friend where have you been and we walked and had conversation he says when are you coming back to church I need you back in the choir he says me and pastor were talking about you a few days ago and another time I went walking sister beauty was there but I would see Michael periodically getting his exercise staying healthy and he always had a smile he always talked in a low tone a truly gifted and amazing man of God.

There was none like Mike. He was extremely gifted and will be greatly missed. Being musicians as we are, it is often difficult to find a place where we can truly fit in and express that which God has given us. You found your place to express your calling and exercise your ministry and gift.
May you be at peace and rest safely in His arms.

Pastor Shirley Caesar-Williams, The Mathis Family and
Mt. Calvary Church Members:
Words can´t express the love and prayers for you in the passing of Michael Mathis. Thank God for his musical talents and being a faithful and dedicated rock at your side. He received his flowers; while, he could see them at The Lamplighters Award. Now, he has gone the last mile of the way. May his soul rest safe in God the Father arms.

What a beautiful ray of light Mike was. Although he's absent in body, his light will continue to shine through everyone whose lives he touched. May the ancestors welcome him with a joyous choir! As long as we speak his name, he lives. Michael Edward Mathis! Ase'

Condolences to Mike's family, Pastor Caesar and the Mt. Calvary Word of Faith Church families. It is with a heavy heart that I post this tribute to my good friend, Mike. He was so mild mannered, soft spoken and respectful. He allowed me to record Jesus, Jesus, Jesus on my CD, and was present at the live recording; what an honor for VHM and Fresh Anointing. I took notes when and how he played organ, and for greatness and friendship, I am eternally grateful. Sleep on my friend in heavenly peace.

What a committed and dedicated young man that Michael Mathis has always been! We knew him in his early days as a musician; he was a great friend and a good-hearted person. He loved Evangelist Shirley Caesar and seemly knew that playing for her was his destiny! Love and Prayers. Rest our brother. Our Heavenly Father is the author and finisher of our faith.
