Michael “Mike” Anthony Messel, beloved husband, father, son, and brother, passed away on April 27th, 2024 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Mike was born on October 27th, 1967 in Alexandria, Louisiana to Samuel Anthony Messel (predeceased) and Charlotte Kathryn Perret Messel. Mike met the love of his life, Debbie Rene Burrell, married in 1994 and together had their son, Tyler Andrew-Messel Irvin (Ryan Daniel Irvin). Mike is also survived by his brother, David Samuel Messel (Kelly Reddecliff); nephews Adam Nicolas Messel (Kellyn Brewer) and John Aaron Correll-Greer (Taylor Correll-Greer); and many other loving family members.
Mike graduated from Dorman High School in 1985 and attended Wofford College. Mike was known to family and friends as a caring, compassionate, and intelligent man. Mike will be remembered by family members for his unique talents in thinking "outside of the box" for the simplest task, recalling offhand historical and political events, and his remarkable ability to read an eight-hundred-page book in one day. However, it is Mike’s most distinctive qualities in diligence towards work, devotion to family, and his welcoming acceptance of novice ideas and individuals that will be missed by all.
Mike will be honored in his wishes with a receiving of family and friends held on Thursday, May 2nd, 2024, between 6 and 8 pm at The J.M. Dunbar Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in honor of Mike may be made to The American Legion Post 94, 94 W Park Dr, Spartanburg, SC 29306 or Spartanburg Humane Society, 150 Dexter Rd, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
