Michael Milinazzo, 77, a longtime Lowell resident and snowbird of Fort Myers, Florida, passed away surrounded by family at High Pointe Hospice House in Haverhill on Saturday, September 6 after a brief illness. He was the widower of Dorothy Ann (Amico) Milinazzo who predeceased him in 2007 after 40 years of marriage.
Born on October 7, 1947, in Lowell, he was a son of Joseph F. Milinazzo, Sr. and Madeline F. (Fritzler) Milinazzo, both deceased. He was raised and educated in Lowell's Back Central neighborhood and graduated from Lowell High School, Class of 1966. After graduating, he married Dorothy Ann Amico and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served his country for a period of 4 years during the Vietnam era, stationed mostly in Thailand, before his honorable discharge.
Upon returning to Lowell, he worked for Joan Fabrics before becoming a letter carrier with the United States Postal Service, serving for over 25 years until his retirement in 2002. In retirement, he looked forward to spending his winters in Fort Myers before returning home to be with his family.
Following his military service, he volunteered as a Little League coach and also played and coached softball and flag football for many years. He served as president of the Greater Lowell Men's Softball league for over 5 years. When not on the softball field, he enjoyed participating in bowling and dart leagues. He was also a longtime member of the U.S. Bunting and Cricket Club in Lowell. A lifelong athlete and advocate for fitness, he set the record time for the 100 yard dash for high school boys. He remained active throughout his life, walking daily and jogging whenever possible.
Throughout his life, Michael put the needs of others before his own. He loved helping his neighbors in Lowell, Dracut and Florida. A giving and caring man, he was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was a lifelong Red Sox fan but his passion was fishing. Saltwater fishing was his specialty, but he enjoyed spending time at a body of water where he could cast a line.
He is survived by his daughter, Laurie A. Carney and her husband, Sean, of Dracut, his son, Michael J. Milinazzo and his wife, Kerry, of Tempe, AZ; 5 grandchildren, Kerrin Carney of Winthrop, Shaila Carney of San Diego, Patrick Carney of Dracut, and Clare and Liam Milinazzo of Tempe, AZ. Additionally, he is survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews, including Corey M. Amico of Tyngsboro.
In addition to his parents and his late wife, Dorothy, he was also predeceased by his father in law, Joseph C. Amico, Sr. his mother in law, Dorothy L. Amico, his sister Maureen and brothers Frederick J. and Joseph F. Milinazzo Jr.
