After High school he enlisted into the Army. He served in the Army from August 1969 to March 1971. He went to Vietnam January 1970 and was in the Artillery Unit until he came home in March 1971. He then met Carla Harold and they married June 25th, 1994. Mike became a stepfather to Michael and Kenneth Mortimore.
Mike loved his grandchildren; they were especially important to him. When he would visit them at their jobs, he would visit with everyone around him. That is how he became known as Grandpa around Hays. When he would see his grandchildren, he always asked if they needed gas in their cars. He enjoyed going to McDonalds every day and visiting with his friends. He loved his dog and always took her for a drive and a cheeseburger. Mike would go to church every day and pray; he had a strong faith in Christ.
